I love going to local video stores that aren't my local. It's probably one of the most personal retail experiences you can have -- and you can piggy back on your friends' relationship with the proprietors.

And I applaud Applause Video for delivering that cozy neighborhood feeling.

I like the selection, the friendly staff members, and the fact that they ask you for a password with your phone number. The latter's a nice little protection of security.

Likely won't be a regular (because who wants to suffer a 30 min. bus ride to return a film?) but I'd be delighted to be one if Applause Video was near my house.

They are closed now really sad as they have been there for a really long time.

Applause may just seem to be one of the many small, indie video stores up and down the drive but it does have some key differences that make it one of the best.

For one, unlike many they have a wide selection of movies that aren't BRAND NEW. Most places seem to cycle out the old stuff pretty quick unless perhaps it is Criterion, but Applause keeps a lot of the older films and also looks to make a solid collection of them. They also do this without having heavy reliance on VHS like so many blatant copiers of videomatica.

The other thing that deserves kudos is their indie, cult and local sections. None of these sections are huge but they often feature very hard to get films and Applause will gladly take local filmmakers fare and put it on their shelves, no matter how indie. I've often gone looking for a small release and only found it at Applause so that definitely gains my respect.

If you're looking for a video store on the Drive I'd definitely suggest Applause. It has a convenient location and a selection that rivals and betters most of its competitors.

Right by Broadway station, this is actually one of the best movie rental places on Commercial Drive. They're smart but not smug about their selection, with a sound appreciation for everyone's personal favorite movies and genres.

The owner seems to let his witty and laid-back staff make the trial picks, and you can see that some movies deserve to rented but never will be. They have categorized movies by country of origin as well as by director, and they even have a shelf of independent movies by local filmmakers, which are free to rent with the rental of something actually worth watching. Oh, and they even have one of those "staff pick" sections, and the staff usually try to one up each other by adding movies about Nazis to each other's section when they're not looking.

With popular watchable movies, a long list of TV series, and a huge campy cult section, applause is the way to go if you don't want to feel guilty about staying in and watching a movie on a Friday night.
