This is my go to sushi restaurant in Vancouver. The food is always fresh and delicious and the prices are awesome! The fact that they only serve sockeye salmon speaks to their attention to quality.
Me and my girlfriend always share the dinner box and it's more than enough for us. Lastly, the staff is always super friendly.
(the reviewer who gave this place two stars is crazy!) -

Restaurant is small, yet busy! Highly recommend the Ebi Mayo!! I'm a shrimp lover so this was a must try for me :) Glad to have finally tried this restaurant after so many years :/ I would definitely go back again and recommend it to others! I'm really picky when it gets to Japanese food due to the cleanliness and the people who make it. No offense!
Only complaint I have is the sticky tables and floor :( Definitely think they can improve on that! -

My surprisingly food-adventurous grandmother loves Applause and proudly took me and my aunt here for a recent lunch. The affordable lunch specials, fast and friendly service, and considerably large dining area are all very good reasons why it gets so packed here in the afternoons. It was so busy on the afternoon that we ate there that we had to take the last seats up at the sushi bar.
I opted to order my favourites a la carte and found that they were not so shabby at all. The tuna tataki came in two large meaty hunks on a tastily dressed bed of greens. The mentaiko udon was slightly too creamy (I didn't know that was possible either!), but still hit the spot. The negi hamachi roll was perfectly dainty and well crafted. The assorted tempera udon arrived as a humongous bowl of noodles in soup with a nice assortment of freshly fried shrimp and veggies on the side.
Not too shabby! -

The reviews are horrendously skewed and VERY OBVIOUSLY RIGGED for this restaurant. This is no where close to being the best Japanese restaurant in Vancouver.
First impression through the door was old fish grease wafting through the air, once you managed to get past that the musty old building smell hits you with another wave of unpleasant scent. These guys seriously need to crank up the ventilation and get a dehumidifier.
This is a typical Chinese sushi restaurant. The food is definitely not izakaya style as has been falsely stated on their website. It is oddly run by a couple mainland Chinese chefs behind the bar, who were pre-cutting a huge pile of salmon much like one would expect from an all you can eat restaurant. Fish is hardly fresh like the false reviews on here have claimed.
Sushi rice on all the sushi was a little hard, most likely precooked and sitting too long and needs tad more moisture from some more vinegar.
Chicken teriyaki was good, crispy skin and oodles of sauce. They seem to get the deep frying down pat, but everything else was typical Chinese sushi restaurant fare.
Pricing is fair and food okay for what you pay, but definitely not the amazing sushi joing that the other (most likely rigged???) reviews would mislead you to believe. -

Wow, what a hidden gem.
Went and had an amazing selection of Roll's, Sashimi & Yakisoba, all were amazing.
Not bad prices either.
To be honest, the only complaint I have about this place is that the staff wear black jean's, not really a fan of a waiter wearing jeans, but if that's the only complaint, it must be darn good food. -

The office hopped down to Marpole for a quickie lunch. I was in the mood for Japanese and Applause was recommended as a cheap, tasty solution.
Their lunch deals or "value sets" are great. Udon, a California roll, and house salad are only $5.25. Substitute the California roll for a dynamite roll or pork gyoza and it's still only $6.25. What a great deal.
The gyozas are plump and delicious looking. Everything was fresh and the service was good and attentive.
The dynamite roll is pretty standard but quite serviceable. The presentation of boxes and portions were pretty sweet.
I love my chicken teriyaki and their meal deal was pretty solid and an ideal lunch option.
The chicken teriyaki don was all around solid. It had good consistency and was quite saucy. I enjoyed the flavour.
I loved the visual presentation of the meals in general. The don came with miso soup, salad, and a corn cream croquette ($8.50).
Applause is a great little place for lunch. I will be back and back often. It's a nice joint for Japanese eats at great prices.Listed in: Diverse Eateries

I've driven by this restaurant many times but tonight was my first dinner. I'll definitely be heading back there. There aren't a whole lot of restaurants in this area let alone good quality sushi- yahoo!
As soon as the sushi was presented on the table I knew we were in for the a great meal. The fish looked fresh (and it was) and the presentation was very appetizing.
Their website describes themselves as an Izakaya but I'd rather head to Guu for that. Although we had the baked cod, stir fry scallops (loved the buttery sauce), and ebi mayo- all good but I'm going back for more sushi. -

I've been to Applause a handful of times now and think their food is consistently great. From their affordable lunch combos (good luck finishing their bento box!) to their fresh from the water sashimi, I've never been disappointed.
Their food always has great presentation and their service is attentive which is important to me when I'm wanting a refill of my green tea.
It's not budget sushi like Samurai and it's not crazy expensive like Tojo's. It's a happy marriage of the two and in an area of town that definitely needs it. -

What a nice surprise Applause is. Sushi on Oak Street? My favourite 14 year old and I went early last night for a little feast of sushi and sashimi. He ordered the Miso soup, which he declared the "best in Vancouver" ( and he is a sushi/Japanese afficinado) and I started with ebi sunomono - which was crisp, refreshing and delightful - a beautiful crescent of finely sliced cucumber, two fat shrimp (ebi) served in a wonderful handmade bowl.
The dishes are all handcrafted pottery.
We moved on to Nasu Dengasku, the eggplant baked in miso sauce, and it was fabulous. Nice crusty topping with sesame, and the eggplant was soft and mushy and tasty. My partner devoured fresh California roll and Negi Hama. Both wonderfully fresh and with generous amounts of ginger alongside.
The yellow tail must have swum to the chef - it was that fresh!
I grossed out the kid by eating hokkigai (surf clam) which was truly fresh and lovely on a bed of grated radish. I'm holding one star back because of the imitation crab in the California roll, and the confusion with our order - I so wanted the Tobiko,(flying fish roe, the real test) but it was left off our order.
Nice service though, keeping our tea full and being respectful of the young fellow. A great atmosphere, comfortable seating, and a high chair for the really young ones. There is a small parking lot beside the complex, but you must be quick to turn in during rush hour. Two of us ate for $27 - average price for much above average food. Applause really is a lovely place - and I will return, as I know the Tobiko awaits! And the deep-fried ice cream, too! -

Visited Vancouver from Seattle, WA over the weekend and my cousin took me to this sushi spot. OMG! By far one of the BEST sushi I have ever eaten at. It was so FRESH!!!!!!!!!! Melt in your mouth kind of fresh!
The sushi chef and staffs were extremely friendly and the food were delicious! Definitely will come back when I'm in town. -

Been going to Applause for almost 4 years since moving to the South Granville area. Great food, great staff, great location!
I am of Japanese decent and very picky when it comes to sushi and other dishes, thanks to my mother. Fish is always fresh and food is yummy! And my kids love the chicken udon.
Our Go-To place whenever we have a Japanese food craving. -

This place is amazing. A little out of the way down in Marpole, but what an incredible selection. The bento boxes (selection of several at lunch and there's an option for a dinner box at night) are the perfect size for sharing, in my opinion. :) The maguro I had the other night was melt in your mouth fresh. Just great! I can't wait to come back again (and again and again...).

Applause is a great local sushi place. Fish is fresh and rolls are tasty. Really what more do you look for in a neighborhood sushi restaurant?

This is my favourite neighbourhood restaurant because the food rocks and I can walk there and back within 10-15 minutes! The staff are nice and the chefs greet and thank you, too!
