best korean on robson (of the 5 or so i've tried so far). get the pork on fire, it will blow your mind.

don't order too many dishes here. they told us we didn't order enough, that we'd be still hungry, and we left with leftovers. great value, cool atmosphere (kinda reminds me of the kill bill scene in tokyo with the 5,6,7,8's) and good service. you can't go wrong.

Review overdue. I came to this place in the summer after a full day in Stanley park with visitors.

I don't remember every dish we ordered. The best dish in my memory was the homemade dumplings with pork and veggies. The skin was just thick enough to hold all the stuffings which was juicy and seasoned correctly. This is one of my favorite dish.

Kimchi & pork hotpot. Yummy. I like kimchi, I like fatty pork so this is the dish for me.
The pork is the fatty belly with 1 layer fat, 1 layer meat type. the spicy broth cuts the fat. Loads of onions, green onion, mushroom and tofu soaking up the juice.

Spicy pork. Great dish. Spicy with a kick but not so much as to burn your tongue. Goes well with lettuce wrapping

Seafood panake. Too doughy and greasy. Not impressed

Tofu soup. Broth not tasty enough. Maybe I'm comparing to House of Tofu soup. Tofu is not the silky type I like. Had good portion of seafood like the shrimp and clams (mind you it's not fresh seafood but frozen variety)

Bibimbob. Not the best I've had. The rice on the bottom of the stone pot should be crispy which this one is not.

The 6 of us had other dishes and we shared 3 large bottles of beer. The bill was around $190. Not cheap but for downtown I guess it's ok.

Free but limited parking at back alley which is good since parking anywhere on Robson can be a nightmare.

Maybe I should start with a disclaimer. I love me some spicy food -- like 'will-go-out-of-my-way-to-order-the-spiciest-thing -on-a-menu-just-to-prove-the-depths-of-my-devotion ' kind of love -- but like any flavour, spice must be handled with care. Heavy-handed chefs will never be a friend of mine. Well they could be a friend, but my taste-buds won't like them. But I digress.

    / end disclaimer.

Living where I do (the west end), a person is is hard-pressed to throw a rock without hitting at least two Korean joints. Even with my wimpy arm, it's no surprise it's taken me this long to visit Apgujung. After hearing some (very) favourable reviews of the place, I was stoked to finally be sitting in what I hoped to be my new favourite Korean spot. It smelled right, it looked right, it even sounded right! It must be right, right? Oh man, were my dreams crushed.

The servers are energetic and over-the-top friendly, but the food -- oh gad, the fooood. Over-sauced, over-spiced, under-flavoured, over-sugared, over-done and I over-paid. What *was* that red stuff mixed with jalapenos that I just ate? It was all spice and no flavour. Rubbery meat and no texture.

Oh I love Korean food. Oh I love spice. Oh I love spicy Korean food. Oh I don't think I'll be back, Apgujung. You missed the mark.

    Sigh.

Nasty, Nasty, one more Nasty!  Absolutely gross!
We did a Yelp search, found this place and we left hungry,
upset, and $60-70 out of pocket.

I can go into details, but why would I for a place I beg you not to go in?
We left and I held my words, my wife, (sweetest person ever) said, "there is no way anyone who knows how to cook prepared our food."

I took my hubby here to introduce him to Korean food. I tried Korean food before on numerous occasions with my Korean friend. We had traditional seafood pancake and sizzling stone bowl dish. It was tasty, but the place itself was dark and I saw many spider webs around window, and I am so scared of spiders! So overall have mixed feelings.

I like this place and quite happy to have found an authentic tasting Korean restaurant in Downtown Vancouver.

The flavours of their dishes remind me of the Korean restaurants I used to frequent in LA and especially around K-Town with Korean colleagues. The pricing is definitely Vancouver standards, but once you get numb, err, used to the high pricing you will find that a few Korean restaurants in the area like these make it worth going.

If you can't enjoy as a group. I would recommend the tofu soup which is very tasty as well as the Seafood Pancake.

The layout and the black colour scheme of the restaurant is a bit odd. It looks like it was a former bar and the interior was kept as is without renovation.

Service is pleasant. One of the few restaurants that happily accommodate having a baby. Of course, we do always go off hours as courtesy to other patrons.

In any case, there are only three Korean restaurants I find most authentic in Vancouver and this is one of them.

Love this place, some items are not so traditional, but the selection and service there is wonderful.  Side dishes (honey potatoes, seaweed, kimchi & bean sprouts or pickled daikon) are usually the first to make it to your table for you to munch on.  Best thing about that?  Its bottomless.

Eat your heart out and have a soju to top it off!

Nestled in the heart of Koreatown (aka Robson + Denman), Apgujung is one of my favourite Korean places.  I don't come by too often (read on), but whenever someone from out of town wants to try Korean food, this place is near the top of the list.

Parking sucks on the street, but fortunately they do have a few spots in the back of the restaurant.  The restaurant has a full main floor and a 2nd floor (near the outer walls with an open centre), giving you a nice view of a giant 100+" projection screen.  Tonight they were showing the Canucks.

One of the reasons why I am not a huge fan of Korean food is the relative price.  To be honest, the food isn't bad, but it is the liquor that kills you.  A small-sized pitcher is $18, and a bottle of soju is $15.  So if you want to do a pitcher of somaek (soju + beer), you're now looking at $33 + HST.  Ouch!

In terms of the food, my only major complaint is that they totally overrate the spiciness.  I can eat entire "3 pepper" (they rate their dishes out of 4 peppers) dishes without touching my drink.  So that was a bit disappointing.

In terms of appies, they give 4 types: potato, kimchi, seaweed, and bean sprouts.

The sausage skewers are a bit pricey, but good.  Basically sticks of cocktail wieners with BBQ-type sauce and a couple of cloves of garlic.

The house special pork with rice is tasty, and has a nice kick to it.  Mixed with the rice, there is just enough sauce to keep everything going. Only $9 too.

The Korean pancake is a bit too doughey and dry, but the sauce does a good job covering it up.

Bottom line?  Good decent food, but expensive drink.

Back when I was a young spring chicken, living in the big city that is New York, on any given night you could probably find me in a good po jang ma cha, throwing back makkoli and slurping on some yummy bu dae chi gae till the wee hours of the morning. I have been to Korean drinking spots all over the globe so trust me when I say I know a good korean bar.

When I was searching for a late night spot in Vancity that still serves food past 10pm Apgujung popped up in the search results. With a name like Apgujung, this place just haaaaaaad to be good. If you don't know, Ap Gu Jung-dong is a very, VERY popular place in Seoul. If I had to compare it to a place someone from the States might know, I'd have to say it's like the best part of SoHo, East Village and UES combined into one really awesome shopping and eating district that is the ultimate place to see and be seen.

So it's safe to say that I had pretty high hopes for this place before arriving and that my hopes were slightly crushed by the time I left. First, this place was not a happening spot. Maybe it was just the night, but it wasn't lively and energetic liked you'd expect a place named Apgujung to be. Secondly, the service was just so so. Maybe because we weren't Korean they weren't showing us much love. Either way, I felt slightly neglected and kept having to flag down the server.

For our meal we ordered a sogogi soon doo boo (soft tofu soup with beef) and the skewers platter which came with about 20 skewers. The soup was fantastic! Absolutely delicious! The skewers however were the absolute worst thing we ate on our entire trip. For starters, they wouldn't let us make any substitutions even though I said I was allergic to one of the items. But the worst part about them were the sauce that they were drenched in. The menu said they were grilled and topped with a homemade sweet chili garlic sauce, but something must have gotten lost in translation there because the sauce was definitely not sweet and didn't have a chili or garlic taste. They did however come drenched in a sauce that tastes exactly like KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce.  -_______________- Just plain wrong....

I hope this place is poppin' on the weekends, otherwise they don't deserve to have the name that they do. Won't be back.

Korean restaurant on the Korean portion of Robson with an upstair seating section.  There is free parking in the backlot, which is awesome for this part of town and it's open until 2AM.

We ordered the rabokki ("ramen noodles in a hot red pepper sauce with rice cakes & an egg" - $9) and some kinda of sliced beef hot pot thing (~$25).  We were told this was a good amount of food for two people.

The rabokki was pretty awesome - extremely spicy and tasty.  I was sufficiently appetized.  Then, the beef hot pot came out - lots of ingredients to help flavour the broth to your liking... with a huge mound of thinly sliced beef.  It was probably enough to fill the hot pot twice over with pure beef (why we didn't take a picture, I'll never understand).  The beef hot pot was delicious and flavourful.  I tend to eat pretty spicy food and it pushed my limits - thumbs up.

There was simply too much beef for our gullets and we had to ask for the remainder to be packed.  Any place that can do that to me of all people serves monster portions.

When the young waiter came back with the doggy bag of shame - he said the portion was for *two* people and he faulted me for not eating enough.  You don't pull on Superman's cape and you don't spit into the wind.  But I was too full to argue.  The kid pwned me -- and he was right.

It was pretty dead when we were there, but given the 2AM closing time and the extensive drink selection (Grape Soju FTMFW), I'll be back.

We had a really nice late lunch here. The menu was pretty broad and oddly much less expensive than some of the neighboring Korean restaurants. The only thing I found difficult about the menu was that they had English descriptions along with Korean characters - so, the exact phrase "bibimbap" was not on the menu, for example. Luckily the waiter was quite friendly and helpful to us non-Korean speakers.

Anyway, I loved my bibimbap. It had great and plentiful components, in addition to the kimchi and other accoutrements. We also had the grilled chicken skewers which were pretty tasty and very heavy on the chicken, with few peppers and onions. The chicken had some cartilage, but it was pretty easy to deal with.

Our only other problems were that our lunch was so late that it overlapped with the whole staff eating a communal lunch (we should have joined in on that! I bet it was delicious), so it was hard to get our check, and the tea was served in plastic glasses and refilled from a plastic water pitcher, so it wasn't very hot.

Went here based on a recommendation that this was one of the best korean restaurants in Downtown Vancouver.  The beef vegetable soup with rice noodles was very good.  Typical grilled marinated beef and pork with vegetables was fine.  Nothing spectacular, but was good nevertheless.  I guess I was expecting a lot more after hearing this is one of the best korean restaurants in Vancouver.  Parking is relatively scarce, but was lucky to get a tight spot in the rear of the restaurant.  I was not expecting the inside of this place to look like a bar - lots of young people in large crowds, but getting a table on the second floor pretty cool.

The Korean restaurant with the 'upstairs', is the first thing to come to mind when someone describes this Korean restaurant on Robson. As there are so many Korean restaurants on the lower end of Robson near Denman, this one just due to the floor layout is one thing that sticks out.

Even though there are two levels to this place, it's a nice cozy place to have a meal, never feeling too big, or too far from the situation. The people who work here are young, like early college young. Also the crowd here is also young, like most of the lower end of Robson and their target market.

The server of ours was helpful, as we were planning to order a bone soup on the menu, and he quickly pointed out that we should order another item on the menu as he said that the item is bland in taste. I respect that the staff know and understand the menu, and ask the client how their personal taste buds are, as it was helpful to us.

We ordered the skewer platter, and there was an abundance of skewers I have never seen. We also ordered the large dumplings, and yes, they were pretty big, like a small fist in size. The food quality has been pretty consistant here, if you are in the downtown core, check this place out.

    Oh soju.

I am small and tiny and Asian and you are always sweet and nice to me.  And you never taste like alcohol, only delicious flavours.

And Ap Gu Jung, you ply me with large jugs of Aloe Soju with delicious aloe bits floating in the bottom (or lemon, or strawberry, or whatever I'm in the mood for), and then I hungrily wolf down pajeon and soondobu and banchan.

Service is okay, a little slow when it gets busy [and if often does, it's sooo full of Korean international students that you know it has to be pretty authentic].  Side plates (they give you 4, not 293840238 like some places in Oakland but I can live with 4) are filled at your request.  They are all tasty!

When they first opened it had taken over from some Mediterranean restaurant and it was funny to look at a map of Sicily while munching on bibimbap].  But they've fixed that now.

We came here for lunch after biking around the Stanley Park seawall.

Spicy vegetable soup with beef & noodles (#23) was wonderful-- the broth was flavorful (esp for a veggie base) and there was plenty of noodles and big chunks of beef.  Totally cleared up my sinuses.

The half and half (#51) was pretty awesome-- a mix of fried chicken and fried chicken with a sweet bbq sauce on top.  It came with about 9 drumsticks and the meat is pushed back toward the top of the drumstick so they come out looking like popsicles.

The service was friendly though they were a bit slow in refilling water and getting us extra napkins.  I'd love to come here again for full on BBQing.

For the nights when I'm feeling for some japchae or bimbibap, this is the place to go.

There's free parking in the back which is rare for any downtown establishment.

Once you enter the place, the smell of BBQ fills the air.The decor is simple. It's a cozy place, always filled with young Korean students. There's sometimes a bit of  a short wait, especially on weekend nights. I prefer to sit on the second floor because it's less busy and it seems to be easier to get service up there.

4 different types of side dishes come with your meal-potatoes, seaweed, kimchi, bean spouts. They're small, but you can always ask for more.

I always get the seafood bimbibap. It's different than the traditional one. This one has shredded crab meat instead of beef, fish flakes and the best part of all- cod roe. As you mix all the ingredients up, the cod roe and the eggs melt together to envelop the grains of rice. It's awesome. No better way to put it.

Their dumplings are also good. I'm just a sucker for any type of dumplings. One serving of this has 10 dumplings, I think? Try it.

Another favourite is a beef hot pot/ grill. Heaps of beef are simmered in the pot, with sauce, green onions, onions, enoki and regular mushrooms. As this cooks, all the flavour mix, and out come a large enough dish to share between 4 people. Get some rice with this. It's not bad.

Seafood pancake is just ok, nothing spectacular.

You will need to be patient here. There is a constant need to ask for refills of water/ tea. Prices are reasonable, and portion sizes are good.

This is my favorite Korean restaurant downtown.  I've been there more than a handful of times and the food is consistently good.  My favorite meal when I'm in need of some TLC after a rainy and dismal day or after a day of riding up in the mountains:  beef and octopus hot pot is super flavorful (can feed 2-4 people, depending on how ravenous you are) and the BEST stone pot dish I've had, EVER, #30.  It's not your typical hot stone rice pot with veggies and beef...this one has a crazy cholestorol soaring amount of fish roe, crab, shredded mackeral, and veggies all topped off with a single raw egg yolk.  When that pot comes out and I hear that snap, crackle and pop...it's music to my ears.  You're going to love the textures in your mouth after it's had enough time to crisp up the rice, etc.

This is a place where you can just eat great food, watch some sports (or whatever is playing at the moment) with a group of friends and drink.  It's also great that it's open on the weekends until 4am (I'm a night owl).  Free parking in the back lot, too.  What's not to love?

Wanna know where all the hip Korean kids go for their food fix? Right here.

More than the unassuming facade might reveal, it's a large and airy 2-floor space that has an authentic Korean vibe and menu.  Prices are fair, and menu hits all the right spots - dolsot bibimbap, pancakes, hotpot, yummy beef bone broth soups, spicy stews, good banchan, and killer king dumpling soup ('mandu-guk")!!!

The servers are young and friendly, and are quite accommodating to vegetarian needs (which is sometimes difficult at meat-centric Korean restos)

Always consistent quality, I'd say this is the best Korean resto on the Lower Robson strip.  Ambience, quality, service, price - it hits all the right points, every time!

If you are looking for a little spice in your life you should definitely check out this place. I realized I had been neglecting the bold and wonderful flavours of Korean cuisine since moving to Vancouver so tonight we were to be reacquainted.

I cant get enough of those delicious grilled short ribs. So full of flavour with just a hint of sweetness I tore the delicious flesh from the bone like a meat crazed carnivore. It was time for some spice, something the Koreans do so well, so the pork belly in spicy sauce was on it's way. Wow what a flavour hit. Sure I worked up a sweat that had the waiter bring be napkin after napkin with a worried look on his face. I think he was concerned that if I lost any more water I might drop to the floor like a shrivelled prune. Add to that the ubiquitous Kimchi served on the side I was in spice heaven.

Our service was friendly and efficient which was something I was not expecting at all. The servings were large and can often be shared by two or more people. Overall I really enjoyed my dining experience at Ap Gu Jung.

I was pointed in the direction of this restaurant by a bunch of different Korean International students who said this place was fairly authentic. If they like it, I thought I would check it out.

Stone bowl be bim bap! It's totally worth it to pay the extra $2-3 and go for the stone bowl over the regular. It's served with rice and you can put your own hot pepper paste so it's seasoned to your liking. The bulgogi, fire pork, and topoki are all pretty good (although I'm not sure how to spell them).

It has two floors and a nice atmosphere. You should treat yourself to a bottle of soju (the authentic Korean liquor) and let someone else pour it for you -- follow the Korean tradition.

Took the parents here the other day for lunch.  The restaurant is small but quaint and the person waiting on us could not have been nicer.  We knew of a few dishes we wanted to try and as she brought us each one, she explained the traditional way to eat it.

Refills on the banchan were quick and plentiful.  While they only give you four types (sprouts, kimchi, potatoes, seaweed) they make up for it in the portion sizes of their food.  Big food!

We ordered the seafood pancake -- as I remember, there were 2 different ones listed ... get the one that costs more.  It came out hot and crispy and very delicious.  We also had grilled beef for two (but it easily fed four) as well as potato noodles with sesame oil (can't remember exact name).  The noodles were phenomenal.

We spent around $45 for four people and left with alot of extra food for the next day.  The waitress even explained how to best reheat each of the dishes we took home.

Will definitely return to try more -- especially the soft tofu stew!

Yummy!  Located among the Korean restaurants on the west side of Robson, I stopped in here because it was packed and looked quirky and cozy, with a fireplace and a fake torn-down wall.

I ordered my favorite dish, altang (fish egg stew) & it did not disappoint.  So yummy!  The pouches of fish roe (& there were tons) were so fresh they melted in your mouth.  4 side dishes and they were alright.

$1.25 for rice?  Ehh...that's kind of odd.  But whatever, the rest of the prices aren't that bad.  Service was a tad slow but they were very nice.

They never turn on the heat in here, so be prepared to wear your coat throughout your dinner. Went there with my gf to introduce her to Korean food. Asked the waiter for his hot pot recommendation and he said the seafood is best because it was very fresh (not to mention the most expensive). When it arrived, the fish was obviously frozen and thrown into the hot soup and therefore was hard and chewy. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

My first foray into Korean cuisine, and Apgujung set the bar way high.

Beginning dinner with delicious little dishes of kimchee, pickled bean sprouts and potatoes, my partner and I sipped on refreshing aloe soju while we waited for our dinner.  Arriving first were the chicken skewers, smothered in delicious barbecue sauce and grilled to perfection.  For our entrees we both had beef bimbibap, served with an egg on top, and the raymun noodles in hot pepper sauce.  Both totally hit the spot, especially the raymun, which I kept eating long after I was full and covered in sweat from the heat of the sauce.  I'll have dreams about that raymun.

The service was great too, very professional and prompt without too much attention.  I highly recommend going here for Korean food, and while I'm not one to patronize a restaurant multiple times while on vacation, I am seriously tempted to return for more.

Dark dining right on Robson Street.  Dark room. TV/Video screen on wall. Major texture is wood.  Dark wood.  Full of students and the West End crowds. Big menu with an interesting variety for what Seoul food you crave. Portions large. Had the Pork and Vegetables dumpings, mandoo on steriods. Huge for appies but tasty and comforting as dumplings got to be.   Japchae similarly huge portion and not at all stingy with the good ingredients. Had the individual meals with rice.   Bimumbap, Soft Tofu Hotpot with Beef,Prime rib beef & vermicelli noodles.   Satisfying but not star quality.
Did I say dark?   Eating is all the senses in play. Missing here is sight. Perhaps that is why the meal was missing just that something.  Dark dining?  Nah.  Let me eat with my eyes as well.

Yeah..parking in the back is a bonus for the West End.

I've been walking by this place for months and have always been interested in going in and when I finally got around to it - definitely worth it.

Great Korean food. We got the seafood pancake, fish cake skewers and the chicken bbq and it was awesome. Add beer on top of it for 2 people and the price was definitely worth it - around $55. Bargain. The portions were huge and we didn't finish everything, but it left our tummies warm and happy. Definitely would love to return.

Great atmosphere too! No sappy decorations or anything, a little noisy, but you can still have a conversation.

Had a large family gathering (15 people).   Excellent selection of dishes.  Plenty of options for all, including vegetarian, pescatarian, and red meat lovers.  Wait staff was very helpful.  Our group included children (from 11 years old), up through 3 generations.  Really had a great time and enjoyed the low key atmosphere.  Wonderful hot pots.  Often, groups this size are difficult to serve, but our waiter took great care of us, easily handling all orders even though the restaurant was full.  Very happy and would recommend to anyone looking for a large group dining experience.

I was full when I came to eat here and still ate more way after my limit, The bowls came with a smokey spicy broth and veggies/meat/tofu and had several small dishes of things to add in or eat on the side, I am glad I made it here before I left Canada, Ill come back in summer and will look forward to this menu again :)

Spicy yet sooo flavorful.  And try the yogurt soju.  The atmosphere was a little lacking when I went, but I would definitely be back.  It doesn't seem like much at first, but the food is amazing!!!

This is one of our mainstays in Vancouver. The decor here is what I would call "typical Korean".  But the food here is very good! The banchan is excellent and their kimchi is extra spicy, which we like. However, I'd say the banchan is fresher in the Summer.  We get beef soon dooboo chigae which is nice and spicy and delicious.  The dduk bok kee is also very spicy and yummy.  However, their "grill it yourself" bulgogi is a little soupy, but I think that's on purpose.  It's not quite the style I'm used to.  It still tastes good, but it has a little more of a boiled texture than actually grilled.  We have also tried various spicy noodle dishes during the summer which we also liked.  And the spicy squid bokum is excellent too.  So far nothing has been a disappointment.

I don't know why there are so many positive reviews for this restaurant because the food is very bland and the cooked hot dishes came out to be warm or cold.  The sizzling stone bowl of rice with vegetables, seawood, an egg came out to be cold when it should have been served hot.  The beef with rice noodles came out to be warm. The server gave our table some tea but it was only a quarter filled for the cups. I mean, it's only tea and  they could at least give a cupful of tea.  In additonal, the tea was lukewarm and the server never gave us refills even when I asked him I wanted more tea. The server just walked away jug of tea and the restaurant was only 95 percent empty. It wasn't busy at all. I find the service to be unacceptable for the amount of customers in the restaurant. I had better Korean food in the Korean Pavilion restaurant at EXPO 86.

i was a bit disappointed with the food.  ate there recently and the dukboki was pretty bad.  sauce was really runny and wasn't great.  kimchi jiggae was a 6, which is 1 step below grocery store.  wish i could have that meal back..
