Review from Maryanne C.
Los Angeles, CA
I don't know why I am writing a review for a clothing store. But this Anthropologie blew my mind. I've never seen such a neat and organized Anthropologie before. I am used to the location in Glendale and Los Angeles that always seems to be cluttered and messy.
I was able to find so many good items because of how orderly the store is kept. I recently visited another Anthropologie a couple days before coming to this one and left empty handed. I just can't express enough how organized this location is. The staff is also very helpful and uber friendly.
If I had more money to blow on clothes and kitchenware, I'd shop here all the time. For now, I wait for their sales because they are amazing. -
Review from Mel O.
I was not amazed nor amused.
Overpriced by far and the clothes aren't all that great. There was nothing in this store of interest to me.
However, when I was waiting for my friend to try on clothes one salesgirl was nice to me....for the 45 minutes that we were there, she was the only person other then my friend that talked to me or acknowledged my existence. Granted, i didn't want to buy/try anything....but they didn't even try to sell to me except that one nameless girl...who probably realized that I was friends with Michelle who is obviously their style of customer. -
Review from Katy H.
Such a spacious store! I love looking at everything but sometimes am pained when I think of actually buying something. Prices are steep and when I think about how they're related to Urban Outfitters, I find it hard to spend my money. UO clothes are sometimes super shoddy and I've bought so many items that simply just fell apart after only one or two washes.
The accessories are great and the dishes, candles and so forth make for great gifts. Unless you find something you simply can't live without, you might find that things here are a little too expensive. -
Review from Anna P.
If I were to rate this store based on housewares alone, it would be a four-to-five star review. The dishes, kitchenware, linens, candles, etc. are adorable and fairly affordable (especially the dishes) and a downright bargain when on sale.
The clothes, on the other hand, are prohibitively expensive for what they are. I might consider dropping this kind of cash on a well-made, classic piece that will be versatile and last a long time, but I can't say that about anything I've seen here. Not even the whole "15% off during your birth month" thing could coax me into setting foot on the upper level of this store.
And while we're at it, I also don't understand the condescending demeanor of some employees here. I don't care how expensive your clothes are, do you realize you still work in retail? -

Unlike other reviewers, I found the sales staff pretty friendly and helpful here (or at least they tried to be, they didn't know which floor some of their items were on...).
This anthro is much more spacious relative to the one in the U District. So it feels more majestic. BUT, both the employees here and at the U Village location have informed me that the U Village location is actually the best stocked location in the Seattle area, because it gets the most foot traffic. So certain styles may only go to the UVillage location, and the downtown location will probably get fewer of each item.
That said, because the UVillage one gets a lot of foot traffic, it may be that things that sold out quickly at UVillage might still be here. That goes for the sale section (upstairs now) as well. Sale items may be less picked over here.
Also, the downtown location is one of the few anthro locations (and I believe the only one in the Seattle area) that carries shoes in-store! They have a few scattered around upstairs, and if you're interested in trying them on in your size, you need to flag down a SA so she/he can grab your size from the back.
The dressing rooms here are REALLY dark. What is with that? I want to be able to see what I'm trying on.
Parking downtown also sucks, so I probably wouldn't come by here unless I was heading down here for something else anyway. -

"Oh! Hi gorgeous sage green green skirt with the horizontal pleating and the foof and the purdy that I can totally wear with a t-shirt and sneakers, or like a grown up so I can 'show my position the respect it deserves'! What's that you say? You were $286 and now you're $29.95? That would piss me off if I thought about it too much, but what say you and I have a little trot downstairs and check on out of here before I can? Yeah, I love you too."
The sale rack here gives me a girly boner. -
Review from Crystal H.
If I were to be a brand - this is who I would be. If I lived in a store, this is where I'd live. I could spend hours debating the merits of one decorative doorknob with another and days reading cookbooks all the while deciding if I should justify buying just a few flowery dresses.
I loved that the sales racks were at the front, right next to a hostess that asked me for my name and introduced herself to me...all while putting a plate of cookies in front of me and urging me to have a couple. Now that's my idea of a little slice of retail shopping heaven feels like! -

I have no idea why I waited so long to review Anthropologie. Let's review the facts:
*I absolutely LOVE Anthropologie.
**My wallet does not love Anthroplogie.
***My wallet and I spend most of our time in the sales racks of Anthropologie.
****This is the largest Anthropologie I've seen (possibly ever).
The conclusion:
very large store= very large sale rack area= very happy Erin. -

I feel that if the price of everything in the store was shaved down by 25%, it would be perfect. I found the loveliest blue ruffled top for $250, and I simply can't handle those kind of prices.
*sigh*
However, I have bought a few items at full price, and I love them more than anything in my closet. I guess if you think of it this way: would you rather own one gloriously, beautifully detailed cardigan for $100 or to purchase 3 ordinary henley tops from American Eagle?
Just a thought. -

This is my "when I become a grandma" future reserve.
All those ruffles, bows, beed embroidery, giant brooches, fabric roses, lack of silhouette will totally go with my future grandma outfits.
You can't deny it, I will be a pretty stylish grandma! -

I still can't figure out why my friend paid $150 for the fugliest skirt I have ever seen in my life at this store.
The skirt is heinous, the sales staff was rude.
I watched helplessly while she eagerly drank the kool aid.Listed in: Adornments

I have to take detours around this store when downtown. Walking in, I get this incredible urge to spend way too much on clothes. It's all too seductive-the unique details, fun colors, girly tops. Everything I've bought here, I've gotten compliments on. It also tends to last longer and fit better than Anthropologie's little sister, Urban Outfitters.
Yes, like others have commented-the sales rack is amazing. But it's way too hard to just stick to the sales rack. Until I get a massive promotion, I'll have to settle for my rationed trips to the store and the clothing porn that is the Anthropologie catalog. -

It's not you, it's me. You've got great qualities, nice retro inspired clothes, stuff for my home, well made products, but for the love of god...why are you so F**KING expensive??!!! Do you want to drain me dry?!
You tempt me and tempt me and then your price tag shows your true colors. Tease. I HATE YOU!!!
I didn't mean it baby. I'm sorry. Here, I'll make it up to you, let me buy something from you.

If I was a rich girl and weighed about 70-80 lbs lighter... I would spend most of my cash here. I'd buy pretty little frocks with flowers on them and hats of an oldfashioned style, I'd parade around in coats done with felted chinese knots and beads. In other words I would be as eccentric as could be.
As far as other things go I get immense enjoyment out of the things I can afford to purchase. Such things as teapots for hostess gifts, books for my family, and such beautiful chotchky's to adorn my home with.
Their window is trully gorgeous and lights fifth avenue up : ) I love walking home past their window in the evenings pausing to wishfully imagine my wallet being thicker and thus enjoy the frivolities this store puts forth to me. -

Last year I took my best friend out for her birthday on a shopping spree at the downtown Anthropologie. (That's what you do for birthdays - let your friends splurge on super expensive stuff they would never buy for themselves, because it's...super expensive!)
Can I just say...I think the customer service there sucks. Not one person asked if we needed assistance, and when we stood around at the fitting rooms with our arms loaded with stuff, one of the girls *walked right past us* and helped the woman BEHIND us (who was dressed to the nines and obviously loaded) into a room! I was really pissed, so I said loudly to my friend, "Hold on, I'm going to go find a room for you." Then I just waltzed right into fitting area and started going toward one of the rooms, ready to knock on a door and open it up for my friend. That caught the attention of the doe-eyed, waify 12 year old manning the front counter and she perkily asked us, "Can I get you ladies a room?". Yes, please. And go eat a cheeseburger while you're at it, thanks.
I was slightly dressed up because I had been at work earlier in the day, but our shopping trip was a surprise to my friend so she was only wearing tennis shoes and a sweatshirt. But hey, guess what? Even though she didn't look like a Chanel ad, she had a gift certificate with quite a chunk of change on it, and she was ready to spend it! We ended up not buying anything and she decided to shop online instead, because no one would help her! It was totally a Pretty Woman moment.
As we left, I said "Thanks" (why, I don't know...it's a habit, I guess) to a couple girls at the register, but they didn't answer. Either because they didn't care, or because they were too busy ogling a jewelry display in the store. Yeah. It's like they were the ones doing the shopping, not us.
Ugh, this made me so mad! I'm still seething over it.
Thanks, Anthropologie. Not only are your clothes ultra expensive, but your staff is ultra lame. -

I give Anthoropologie 5 stars so what!!
They are GOOD. they are also expensive but they are good.
I got two adorable chairs, each was 70 bucks and I love them.
Check the price tag!! sometimes it's not $270 or $189,,,like today an adorable blouse had $70 tag. Hell, Urban Outfitters sells blouse for $70 or more, right!? I should have bought it. but I just had no money. Details,,,,,that's what gets me. I can't resist the pretty details on the clothes! It excites me....
I think their stuff is priced right. We just have nothing that are good and still affordable around here. That's why we get mad. We just need better clothing stores. or we all just should live in Japan. All I want is a once a month shopping visit to Japan. OK now I'm just talking about my dreams.... -

1st time in this store. My friend from HK was AMAZED they carry knobs (as in door knobs) and kitchen stuff...so country. I like this store because it's different, not a generic Banana Republic or Abercrombie.

Anthropologie isn' t quite as fly as it used to be. The lovely drapy tops are a bit too limp and thin and the hippie factor has ascended to a new high. Unless you are browsing to appreciate the inaccessibly expensive furniture downtairs, skip it and head upstairs where the SALES are. This is where the action is at! The sales racks are always full of lovely apparel that isn't in a dejected state. The fitting rooms are very cool, and buddies can sit and read up on fashion, dating and housewares at the coffee table and velvet couch.
Added hooray that this store carries Salt Works Jeans - these babies FIT a woman with NORMAL curves (IE, no stick insects with boy hips!) -

I deserve an apology!
Just went in for mittens. I like the style of the shop and knew it might be pricey
I asked if on the off chance they had real, honest to goodness, one piece mittens.
One girl did not know but was so nice she asked via walky talky
The woman who came down to explain was rude, argumentative and just mean.
She even asked me "why did you ask about them if you dident know what they
Looked like?"!
They won't get much business from me -

My recommendation: go to the U Village location or shop online. -
Review from Dave B.
I've been to a few Anthropologie stores in the last year. This one Seattle stands out. We popped in not to find anything in particular but to inquire about the return policy. The saleswoman who answered questions was extremely helpful and told us, "It's really important for us to know what works and what doesn't."
The fact that it was just one of the people on the floor saying this, not the manager, not a corporate customer service representative, really impressed me. How do you teach everyone within an organization to understand what's important? They must have terrific training at this company. Or is it they have truly empowered their people with good information and great guidance? I can't imagine there's a corporate policy written for every situation.
Too bad most stores couldn't be as courteous and helpful as people at Anthropologie. -
Review from Renee C.
"You MUST go to Anthropologie"....I think I have heard this as many times as your average kid has heard "Now eat your greens little _____(insert name)". So, upon my latest trip to the States, in I go. I went out of my way even.
And I'm glad I did! Me likey!!
Since I did very little museum/art/culturally-oriented activities while in Seattle, I felt like ogling the sometimes ethnically-inspired clothes filled this category.
I found two lovely lovely little tops (one of which had a great sale price). Nice quality and attention to detail. And one thing that I found funny was that the sales girls were much more apt to help you out or give you opinions if you tried on a pair of Joe jeans. Maybe its like some kind of initiation factor. Once I caught on and tried one on, I felt like I fit in. And the jeans fit too... -

THANK YOU! I have been looking for a new clothing store to shop since .... well .... I'm trying out the whole "young professional" thing and can't stand going into Forever 21 anymore. I like the fact that I can buy nice, stylish, and affordable clothing that will last longer than a month.
Anthro downtown has proven to have good customer service. They have a larger selection than other Anthros in the area.
Again, I appreciate finding this gem that can fulfill all my shopping needs :) -

This location is very spacious and beautifully decorated. You can smell the scented candles Anthro sells upon entering. The dressing area is like all the Anthro locations I've been to, which is much more spacious than most retail stores. The sales people are, for the most part helpful, yet non hassling. It's only on rare occasion that I encounter an annoying one. (It's a pet peeve of mine when a sales person asks me if an outfit works for me while blocking my view of the mirror before I've even had a chance to see it)
They don't tend to stock many shoes at this location, which I have to subtract a star for.
Overall, I love this location and visit it every time I happen to be downtown. -

Walked into Anthropologie on my way to the health food store. Found it by accident. My two favorite locations are in Manhattan. But I'm in Seattle and so I must discover........
Love the store, because it's so girly. All the bright colors, flowers and polka dots. Gorgeous, fashionable and very poetic to ensure every woman can embrace their femininity. Romantic clothes, hair accessories, books, linens, trinkets and home decor. Bodaciouusss.
Hate this store, because it's overpriced. I rather spend the money on something designer. So thank goodness for summer sales that endorse racks up racks with slashed prices. And I resisted my urge to shop. I don't believe it either. But it is true. Doke! -

What a beautiful store with such beautiful clothes and beautiful furniture....at not-so-beautiful prices for a recent college grad. If I wanted to forgo eating and start living in a well-furnished cardboard box, then I suppose that I could afford everything I want in here!
This particular location is full of really nice employees who won't push you around. And thank goodness for that because I really don't need that extra push to max out my credit card in this store.
A little birdie here also told me that the big furniture pieces in the dressing rooms go on sale every once in awhile. This little birdie is planning to call me as soon as the massive dove-tailed dresser/hutch is on clearance. Connections, baby. -

---Update--8/17/2007
Complaining pays off sometimes. I submitted a comment on their website, and received a response from the NW Regional Manager today. I was impressed. It was a really kind, professional response. No arguments, no dysfunctional non-apology. Short and sweet. She offered to find an undamaged dress and have it sent to me. !!! I thought--that's cool, but there's no way they'll find one. I was happy, though. About 10 minutes later, I got a phone call and the downtown Seattle store wanted to confirm my address--they're shipping it today.
Fo' reals. I'm shocked and really impressed with their follow-through. I don't care if people screw up--it's more about their response to it. They really got the response part RIGHT. And for that, my rating goes to FIVE STARS. That's right, I think their timely, polite response is worth that much.

I like the clothes, but I prefer to shop at the University Village location. It may be smaller, yes...but the salespeople are really nice. Maybe it was just me, but the downtown store staff seemed frosty for no reason. I pointed out damage on a dress and I was accused of attempting to "bargain hunt". More like, "how can you charge $120 for a dress that is busted, and why does it matter that it's already on sale?" ...maybe it's ON sale because it is so freaking fragile, right?

Anthropologie, I love you.
Came in here with my sister and found the most amazing dress, on sale, and it totally made my day.
Let me start off with the fact that I love the way this store is set up. I always feel at home, and kind of wish that I had the funds to buy one of each of their aprons and all of the home goods that they have as well. Then I would pretty much buy the rest of the store and create a new wardrobe.
The service here is great. The sales girls are all really friendly (and it doesn't feel fake the way some retail sales people can make you feel grossed out by their "sweetness". Everyone was nice and helpful. I think it's super smart that they write your name on the doors so that they can make the shopping experience more personal (and helpful!).
My only qualm with the store is that it is SO expensive. Sure, the clothes are beautiful and of good quality, but I just wish that they were slightly more...economical. Nevertheless, I will always come back here for the sales. -

I have such mixed feelings about Anthropologie! It's seriously dangerous for me to go in this store. I looooove the clothes, and the knick knacks, and the candles, and the pillows....Basically everything. Unfortunately, I end up trying on the clothes and invariably being sad that I can't justify spending $70 on what, in the end, is just a tank top (albeit a VERY cute tank top).
That said, I did recently venture in to buy the world's cutest apron. It looks like a dress and it makes me feel like a prairie princess while I cook.
It's too bad everyone has negative reviews about the service, though. I don't doubt peoples' experiences, but I had the best service EVER here the other day from a lovely gal named Chelsea. She was super tolerant and helpful to me and my sister while we spent hours in the dressing rooms trying on everything in the store and asking her advice on accessories. I guess the key is to just go when Chelsea is working. -

This store is my own personal mecca. I love it. I rarely buy anything there (I'm still a poor student - damn you grad school!) but I still love it. The few items I have from here I still wear on a regular basis because they are timeless and hold up surprisingly well. Yes, there are some...unique...pieces every time I visit but there is always, always a handful of things I drool over. And I regularly fantasize about living in the Downtown Seattle store. It smells heavenly, it's two floors, it has a huge array of really fun housewares, an awesome bed and of course tons of clothes :-)
Someone at Anthropologie corporate, please, pleeeeease open a store in Honolulu! -

My source of inspiration for everything Parisian flea-market. I shop the home section frequently, and even when I don't buy anything, it's great for ideas. Smells dreamy, and the shabby chic displays are top of the line.
Granted, a clock is $1000, but my advice is~ hit Anthropologie for ideas, then hit the MANY great antique and consignment stores in Seattle and you can replicate the look for way less! I do home staging and decorating on the side with the Anthropologie philosophy in mind. You can decorate for less, but make it look like you've spent a fortune in the south of France. Have fun with it! -

I love Anthropologie for the following reasons:
1. The sale rack kicks ass. I've found $300 items knocked down the $20. I typically go straight up to the sale rack in the store or online.
2. The employees are friendly and nice and helpful.
3. This is a great place to get inspiration for outfits and home décor. It's fun to wander around here, and get ideas for the thrift store and flea market.
4. My boyfriend likes coming in here too. The lighting and music is nice, and there's stuff that he likes looking at while I try on clothes.
5. This is a great, if not perfect, place to buy a gift for a woman you don't know that well. Almost every woman loves this place.
6. The lotions, soaps, candles and fragrance all come in beautiful packaging. Everything feels special and unique.
7. Even though it's a chain, it doesn't feel like one at all. It is still very possible to feel unique when wearing their clothes.
8. They don't seem to follow lame trends like other stores do. Again, unique and unusual pieces abound.
And scene. -
Review from Krissi P.
Seattle, WA
I'm really not a big fan of chains simply because I'm not so into the idea that I'm getting stuck with the exact same thing as everyone else, but there's something about the clothes here that make that seem less likely. I love to drool over the catalogs (beautiful photography, they make me want to run away to the south of France) but budget-wise, I'm out of my league. The sale racks are great, though, and the housewares, too. Even if I only end up browsing I still have a good time - if you're looking at clothes you absolutely can't afford, there's no real guilt about not buying them.

Urban Outfitters is the poor man's Anthroplogie! A must when I get a shopping itch and want to avoid a crowd of twenty somethings struggling to find themselves in a large box filled with over priced crap made by people they'd be afraid to make eye contact with on a class trip to China.

I love this store. YES it's ridiculously expensive. NO I can't really afford to shop here. YES some of their clothes are horrid. However. Everything I've bought there has been very well-made, unlike Anthro's obnoxious younger sibling Urban Outfitters, where $50 gets you a rag that's falling apart before you take the tags off. And they have a gigantic selection, so unless you're unthrilled with current fashion in general (happens to me sometimes) you'll very likely find something you like. While it's a huge chain, I find that the clothes are usually unique enough that mixed in with my own wardrobe I don't feel like a clone. The sales are pretty great--I think I've only bought two items full price before. It's not common to find something amazing at really bargain-basement prices, but their typical sale prices bring things down to regular levels (Gap, Brass Plum). I rarely have trouble finding fabulous stuff on the sale racks.
I've never had trouble with the customer service. I'm one of those people that prefers to be ignored unless I want help and ask for it, and this works well at Anthropologie. Everyone who's helped me there has been very friendly. They also have an awesome return policy, which is great because I frequently shop the sales online and just as frequently have to return things.
The store is so much fun to wander in. The design and ever-changing decor is charming (yes, they try a bit too hard, and yes it shows, but I don't care). Their housewares are just as quirky and stylish as the clothes, and those are definitely something to look out for on sale. If a delicate lacey-edged porcelain cake stand sounds like a score to you, this is your place. -

I heard the politics of the founder is not so liberal even though he founded Free People as well...but it is hard to ignore this store when I find everything I ever want in one spot. It can be pretty expensive to shop here, but the the secret are the sales. There is always something on sale and it still looks fabulous.

The products, of course, get 5 stars. The staff definately knock a star off. I guess they think that a chunky girl has no business shopping there, but there's still plenty that we can spend our dollars on. Once in awhile you'll find a friendly face.
But, whatever, everything is fantastic and beautiful. I would buy almost anything form there if I could. Sometimes I just go and drool, and try to wait for the sales. -

Anthropologie's fare doesn't vary much from city to city. I avoided the temptation of frilly blouses, cardigans and late season Summer dresses. I lost it at the fragrance bar. I am a sucker for anything violet, jasmine or sandalwood, notes of which can be smelled in their Tokyo Milk line.
