High atop the western hills of the South Okanagan's Golden Mile sits Antelope Ridge Estate Winery. This expansive site provided us with one of the most stunning views we've had the opportunity to take in so far.

The production facility there is state of the art, and was envisioned by 10th generation French winemaker Olivier Combret and his family in 1992. The site was selected by Combret based on its ability to produce world-class grapes without the pesticides that were required in other more humid regions.

Antelope Ridge is worth visiting for the view alone, but visitors should also sample Combret's premium wines in the winery's modest tasting room and wine shop.

Antelope Ridge's wines are grown on the estate and reflect the terroir of the region. A wine to note is the Chardonnay Icewine, which won gold medal at the 2006 Chardonnay du Monde in France. Past Chardonnays have gained international attention. They offer two labels - St. Vincent (reserve) and Lineage.

The tasting room, while open from 9 am to dusk, is not always staffed, as the Combrets are often busy attending to the many tasks that come with running a winery and vineyard. As such, you may be required to use a buzzer at the tasting room door to request service.

    Last Word:

The drive to this winery is beautiful and the site provides a great vantage point of the whole southern part of the valley.

We got excellent attention when we went to this winery. The winemaker's Mom poured samples for us! She has a beautiful French accent and knows a lot about wine. She even followed us out to the parking lot and talked to us about the vineyard, the year's weather conditions and other interesting topics that would have to fall into the "local knowledge" category.

We walked away with an Old Vines Chardonnay. Old Vines, you say, but this winery is new.  Gotcha! It has only changed its name. It was formerly known as Domaine de Combret Estate Winery. But that seemed too old-school French and stuffy for today's sassy animal label market.

The Combret family has been making wine here since 1993 and many of the vineyards they own have been under vine for 30+ years.

First off, we HAVE had some great wines from them in the past, but this is based off all our experiences.
It's a bit off the main road, down a longer dirt road, but has some good views.  Every time we've gone, it's been right about opening time.  We come up, find the door locked, and ring the bell.  A little while later a ATV type rig shows up with this little French gal.  She seemed quite knowledgeable every time we've gone, although somewhat irritated to be there.  So we didn't feel as welcome.
The wines are a bit hit and miss....some have been very nice in years past however.  Price points are a bit higher than quality, but as I've stated in other BC reviews, since they don't import to the states, sometimes you gotta buy if you feel they could be great.  That being said, out of all the BC wines we've purchased through the years, this winery is the one we didn't enjoy as much after returning home....and no, we never tasted here at the end of a tasting day.
We will always stop and try again however.
