Review from DineoutGal A.
Winnipeg, MB
I've always dined at their sister restaurant, Bombolini but never made my way upstairs to Amici. Well, I am glad I did make that trip upstairs because I had a great meal. Unfortunately, Winnipeg's fine dining scene is diminishing - I've dined at nearly all of them and either their quality has diminished (Sydney's), they've closed (Mirlycourtois), service is snooty (most Wasabi locations) or their food and experience is not worth the price (Mise). I miss Gluttons and Mirlycourtois. So I guess Amici is a classic throwback restaurant that doesn't try to keep up with the food trends and new stylized decor. That being said, the place does look a little tired. It's a fairly traditional Italian restaurant but the food is solid.
It was just half full on a Friday night. The crowd ranged in age quite a bit. The lighting is dim and there's just enough ambient noise to carry on a good conversation.
The bread basket is the same as the restaurant downstairs, soft foccacia and breadsticks.
Had a great appetizer special, grilled portabella mushrooms topped with a creamy sundried tomato goat cheese and drizzled with the most divine sauce - I wanted to lick the plate!
The Carre d'Agnello Arrosto - Roasted Provimi Lamb Rack with Herb Crust and Root Vegetables ($36) was highly recommended by the server. I've ordered lamb at many places and what I've noticed is that many places charge upwards of $40 for a tiny rack of lamb. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this 4 bone rack of lamb was a very generous portion. The meat was oh so tender and perfect at medium rare. The only other memorable rack of lamb I've had was at Union Square Cafe in NYC. This dish made me remember why I love lamb so much!
The Vitello Parmigiana ($29) - Veal Parmesan with Roasted Asaparagus, Parmegiano Reggiano and Mozzarella. The veal was tender and delicious. Draped on top of the veal were the roasted asparagus with melted bocconcini - the cheese was pretty unnecessary and didn't add to the dish.
The wine list is not great - surprisingly it's mostly mainstream stuff like Wolf Blass.
Service was attentive and water levels were always maintained (something many restaurants fail to do). -

Atmosphere a little dated, but food and service made up for it. It was great! To me this is the best Italian restaurant in the entire City of Winnipeg. I think I have only eaten at 2 others...but still this is the best. Italian is not overly popular in Winnipeg.

York, ON
I am in and out of this city a lot lately. I am from here originally and Amici's has been around a while. You can tell, they haven't changed the decor since 1986. The food is great though as is the service. I just wish they would redecorate it looks worn out and out of date and it would rate a little higher for me if it felt a little more contemporary and looked a little less tired. The food is good though. I will go again and just imagine that I am back in 80's.
