Small Eastern European deli store owner by couple from Ukraine who came to Vancouver in 1996. They are really helpful and friendly.

I usually go there for ukrainian bread and their delicious home made piroges. I can recommend beef/pork ones, they are almost as good as from my mom :)

If you will go there, buy also vietnamese sandwich (banh-mi) from Ba-Le store which is next to Alenka. It cost about $3 and the quality is probably best in the city!

So, I came here today on my home. Because of all the good reviews I wanted to come in. I went straight for the freezer and got a potato & cheese perogy. I haven't eaten them yet, but I will!

The lady gave me the same instructions as Crystal. It was so cute. She told me that when she goes home she's too tired to cook so she grabs some of her homemade perogies and brings them home.. and her 'friend' which is the boiling water makes her delicious perogies!

What a delightful woman. I also bought some georgian baklava, yum!

Victor, dude you are the man! If I want to talk, shop, laugh or hear someone give it to me straight,  this King of the entrepreneurs is head and shoulders above the rest. Shopkeepers take notes.

Small Russian deli but boy what an impact! Shows you what friendliness and personality can do and that's not even commenting on the goods yet. We are talking top of the line Russian pastrami. Jesus, I never even knew there was such a thing and peroghies in about 10 different varieties, you name it....we stuff it. The shelves are filled with European delicacies in addition to a showcase filled with prime salami's and cheese.

Reasonable prices, free entertainment and mouth-watering delights. Victor you can do no wrong!

Thanks Louise G for highlighting blueberry perogies. I beelined it straight for the frozen foods case, crazed with the thoughts of summertime berries in my mind.

What I didn't realize was that I'd be greeted with such an amazing lady behind the counter. Her spirit was so kind and well meaning. Our conversation:

Lovely Grandma like lady: Do you speak Russian?
Me: No. But my grandma did.
Lovely Grandma like lady: [smiling] Would you like me to show you how to eat the perogies?
Me: Yes Please.
Lovely Grandma like lady: First you make the boiling water. Then add the frozen perogies. Make sure the water is boiling, not cold. They float to the top. You cook for 4-5 minutes.
Me: Thanks, that's so sweet.
Lovely Grandma like lady: You're welcome. Enjoy.
Me: How do you say "thank you" in Russian?
Lovely Grandma like lady: Spasibo
Me: Spasibo

Best fricking perogies I've ever had!

A quick trip back for blueberry perogies, and we break the bank!

The selection in the store is nothing short of amazing: very good Russian teas and preserves; a treasury of sweets; a collection of prepared fish that is worthy of it's own store. Where else could you find salt, smoked, and pickled whitefish, salmon, etc?
And as usual, brilliant service.

This store is small, and isn't crammed with items, but I like it that way. It's bright and clean and easy to understand, especially if you aren't familiar with Eastern European cultures.

They have all kinds of dried specialty items, cheeses, baked goods, fish, some deli items. I didn't stay in the store for long because it was very late on Halloween but what I did see I liked. We bought some vanilla wafer cookies that were incredibly delicious and very cheap.

The woman behind the counter (I presume she's the owner) is so lovely and friendly.

I definitely think this store is worth checking out.

I go here to talk to the owner. I usually don't really need anything but will pick up something because I like what a good conversationalist he is. The selection is definitely top quality goods, hard to find (at least in Vancouver) and the perfect thing for an eastern European to feel at home. It's all the little comfort foods that make for a delicious dinner.

I've only met the husband (Victor, I think). He was sooo nice and gave us candies and cookies to munch on our way out. He tells it like it is and is just a freaking delight in a world of all too often bland shopping.

I have searched for a place to buy frozen pelmeni in Vancouver since my recent move here.  Online searches did nothing...  No one here seems to know what it is... But one day I eyed this little shop on the corner of Fraser and Kingsway - Alenka, European Foods.  Every time I went by it was closed.  But today, it was open.  And today, I discovered where I can find pelmeni, smetana, eggplant spread, all your Russian favorites.  They even had Russian orange fanta!  It doesn't get much better that that...

I haven't tried my pelmeni, cmetana or moloko (the sweetened condensed Russian milk), but I am looking forward to trying them this evening.

The owners are very sweet and talkative and are eager to share with you about their products, what is the best pairing, how they prefer them and how to fix them up.

I am so excited to say that my hunt for Russian Pelmeni has finally ended.

Bon Appetita!

It is a nice little European food shop run by a couple originally from the Ukraine.  They offer handmade pieroge, made by the owner.  They have cheese, sour cherry, cabbage, potato, potato cheese, turkey, and beef.   They also have a nice selection of canned products from Russia, including wonderful sprats in oil.  Deliciously smoky on a slice of rye bread!  For those that crave various Russian chocolates and ice creams they also have those available.  The owners are very friendly and love to explain their various offerings - worth a visit!

This little store carries Eastern European items. There's a deli, a frozen section, candy and boxed items. The frozen potato perogies are really great and one bag goes a long way.
