Black rice sushi? Not in my wildest dreams! The black rice gave the House Sunset roll a plethora of flavours which decadently melted in my mouth. It is prawn tempura rolled in black rice, avocado, salmon, garnished with ebi mayo and green onion (be aware that this roll is spicy if you are into that) This is a medium size roll (large if you are from the west end) with 8 pieces that are great for sharing.
I will be venturing out again to Akira to try out the Volcano roll. Can't wait!Listed in: Sushi Madness

Ordered just one roll, the unagi/avocado roll, fresh and tasty. Sounds a bit generous based on one roll, being my 3rd snack of the day before dinner, but worth going back to check some other food. I just know it's clean, and same for the washrooms lol.
service was good too, good location. -

I had the tuna tataki, a creation roll and toro sashimi. The toro, my favourite food in the world, was amazing, melted in my mouth and almost brought tears to my eyes. The service and the price is great, you can have a feast for two for under 20. The space is a little small, and the last table available was small and a little sketchy. Besides that it was delish and I will definitely be back to try to v
olcano roll and the black rice! -

With an upcoming trip to Vancouver, in advance, I researched sushi restaurants in the English Bay area, and liked the nice things I read about Akira, so decided to make it a destination during my trip. The black rice was nice, felt healthier than even brown rice, but perhaps I'm spoiled by Southern California sushi, because I thought the sushi overall was just okay. Definitely didn't make me moan, like good sushi often does. There are dozens and I do mean dozens of sushi restaurants in the area, I would not particularly recommend this. My rating would be 'average'.

Clean eating can be kind of a bummer when trying to figure out where to go out to eat, but this place is delicious and healthy. I love the veggie roll combo, and the veggie bento box has everything you could want in it. The black rice is a really cool addition too. The staff are friendly and attentive, always refilling the green tea. The only bad thing about the place is the physical restaurant - it's very small and there isn't much room for bigger groups, but that isn't really a big deal since they do takeout and stuff.

Totaly decent. The black/purple rice is interesting, the flavour is more earthy, nutty and sweeter than regular rice. The texture is also interesting. I would say not quite as sticky as regular white rice. Complements the more savory type rolls really nicely. If you look up the nutritional information though it isn't THAT great. 4g of fiber/100g, 1.5 mg of iron/100g and still about 350 cal per 100 g. Black rice is still rice and I don't see what the added benefits are compared to brown rice.

Quite possibly the best sushi fish I've had. The fish was so fresh, so good.
I got the sushi combination 2, with 6 pieces of California roll and 2 salmon nigiri and 2 hamachi nigiri. Great price - about $8 for all that! (I also opted to get a miso soup, because I was in a miso kinda mood)
The fish was incredibly fresh and tasty. The nigiri fish melted like butter on my tongue. So smooth, you hardly needed teeth. And teh California roll....omg....
The one possible bad thing (and thus the four star rating instead of five) was that the rice seemed too.....something. I can't put a word on it, but basically, it was just a little heavy and solid for sushi rice. Now, I got the white rice, and apparently they specialize in black rice for their sushi, so next time I go (which might possibly be tomorrow for lunch....and perhaps for dinner too...), I may have to try the black rice, which everyone else was eating...
Pretty quick service, although there can be a long line, so consider yourself forewarned. The wait staff wasn't hugely attentive, but I don't need much when I eat, so I didn't mind too much. -

Oh Vancouver you are so spoiled with your amazingly fresh fish. You have no idea what the rest of Canada goes through with their hunt for the perfect sashimi.
There was actually one day where I ate here twice. Yes twice. My name is Sahra and I am addicted to spicy tuna rolls. Akira Sushi is my dealer, and what a great dealer they are. If I find an apartment in the West End I suggest you all buy stock in this restaurant. I'll be here 3x per day. -

This was my local sushi joint for 6 years living in the West End. The best sushi for the price hands down! Try the purple rice. It is literally the most nutty and delicious addition to the normally boring white rice sushi roll. The fish is always fresh and service is super fast for take away. Now that I've moved to the East Coast, I can't bring myself to delete the number in my cell phone. I will always miss this place!

Thank you yelpers! Great find, casual, clean, friendly neighborhood place with above average sushi and great prices. Loved the rainbow roll and black rice california rolls. The gyoza were so nice and crispy, and the wrapper was so fresh it may have been homemade. Great service, our green tea was never empty and always delivered without prompting with a smile, thanks ladies. We will definitely be back!

Woooooooowww..... I just had some of the best sushi EVER! This place looks very humble from the outside, but it contains really really really good sushi-- Go for the black rice rolls, they can't be beat, and with the fresh fish- it's the best tasting affordable sushi I've ever had.

Rainbow roll is my drug of choice. Fast service, eat in or take out. I'd suggest to take out and sit in English Bay to enjoy it.

This is one of my favorite restaurants on the Denman strip.
I go in there quite often, and it's often full with people you can tell are local regulars.
The food is always good. You can tell they use fresh ingredients, and it's not greasy. I love the Salmon Tempura Dragon. It's got cream cheese, salmon tempura, and cucumber inside, and on the outside it has avocado, mayo, and little fish eggs. YUM YUM!!
There are also quite a few healthy options.
The service is always good, and the atmosphere nice.
I find the price quite reasonable for Sushi. -

Our staple sushi joint. We order from here at least one a week due to its solid quality sushi at a decent price. Don't let its modest appearance fool you. The standard sushi fare (maki & sashimi) is always generous and always fresh. Also, be sure to order everything with black rice, which is awesome and healthy!

This place is affordable, has tasty sushi and a variety of combos available. I literally think that their California rolls are some of the tastiest in the city. I've tried to put my finger on why, and the only thing I can think of is that they are somehow creamy. In any case, om nom nom nom. I would definitely say go if you are looking for a sushi place in the west end.

Average bordering below average. We had sushi and beef don. The former wasn't great and the latter was a little too salty. The prices are reasonable though so if you're looking for a quick affordable meal, Akira fits the bill.

Akira Sushi has been one of my staples for years-- quick, cheap, and pretty tasty. I love that they offer black rice for their rolls. Their yam tempura roll is a wonderful thing. My only real complaints would be about the chipped plastic dishes (the miso bowls scream bisphenol A ) and that you have to specifically request WILD salmon for your sushi-- and it's not even available for the lunch boxes. Why even dabble in the farmed junk? Just tack a dollar onto the price and it's perfect.

O.M.G - their chicken ramen in simply orgasmic. i tried it three times just to be sure before i wrote this review. most ramen i've tried are pretty bland and don't really offer much - but they gave generous and meaty serving of chicken, noodles and fresh veg - try it with an extra egg!. yum yum yum!

i dont eat white rice and akira has a black rice option. black rice is a cousin of brown rice :) when cooked it looks purple! far tastier than brown rice when using it for sushi. plus it's super rich in iron, fiber and amino acids. love it.
howeverrrrr! akira is a dirty scam because their "black rice" is just dyyyed white rice. people have serious allergies. not very nice to do that, or legal.
jerks. -

I didn't know I had a 'regular' sushi place until I realized how often I eat from Akira on Denman. Super fresh, good prices, efficient service, outdoor seating if you can nab it. And I love their explanation of the nutritional value of black rice.
