Pleasantly surprised. Beau and I were driving aimlessly for a Japanese restaurant on Lonsdale and we were slowly getting closer to our regular joints Sushi Nami, Yuko Maki or Kokoro until I caught AKA and decided to just try it.
Once we enter the restaurant we were seated and I also noticed that they were very attentive to guests walking in, seating them with menus and tea immediately. Somehow, the waitress forgot our menu and I had to ask for it, not a big deal.
Then I went to shift my chair closer and as I grab the edge of the seat I felt the yuckiest stickiness on my hands. Ugh, gross!! Then I started to look around the restaurant. There were dust bunnies gathered by the windows and the table was a little grimey. I had to stop myself before I gross myself out and have to walk out the restaurant.
There were two waitresses on the floor, you have a balance of one being courteous and the other being very abrupt. The staff all spoke a little too loud in Cantonese, and sometimes it would be about the guests. I didn't find this to be too professional.
Ok, onto the food. We had the AKA Tom Bo Crab roll, negitoro roll, dynamite roll and an order of toro sashimi. The food all came in a timely manner, the crab roll absolutely delicious, dynamite roll had fresh tempura, negitoro was just right and the toro was the freshest!! Like I said, plesantly surprised. However, if you like wasabi, they don't mix enough of it in their paste so we ended up asking for more multiple times. And, the wasabi/ginger dishes are portioned out ahead of time, which is efficient, but you get a little crusty wasabi blob. @_@
The bonus? Atleast 30% cheaper than Honami and Sushi Nami but better than the budget sushi of Kokoro and Yuko Maki.
If they can fix the cleanliness and professionalism factors, they're a 5 star! -

Sadly I am down-grading my previous rating.
I believe there must be a new chef as the food we ordered recently just wasn't the same. Most of the food was decent and edible, but the teriyaki beef in my son's bento box was absolutely disgusting, and one of the tempura pieces on mine was double or tripled cooked, overbrowned and dried out.
Prices have gone up, too, but I guess that has to happen with food prices increasing.
Maybe they can get things back with a change in kitchen staff. I will go there again eventually, but will be trying other options since there are so many on Lonsdale :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

I wish I lived closer to Sushi Heaven!
This is by far some of the best sushi I've had in Vancouver.
The presentation is very well done, with a wicked mix of flavour and colour.
Apparently their menu changes from time to time. But I recommend trying any of the special rolls. They are incredible.
You can order online from their website and if you pickup your $20+ order, its 10% off.
Actually I am glad I don't live next to this place, because I would go broke in a hurry. As my mother always used to say, "Everything in moderation".Listed in: North Vancouver adventures, Sushi time

Super yummy and their deals are great! Right now they have 2-3 people per table: 1/2 off roll special. 4+ people, first roll is $1. How can you beat that?
Nice outdoor patio as well to enjoy some of this fine weather. -

Great place for a casual meal, and the staff is very friendly to large groups, even bringing us a new sushi roll out for all of us to try! I've been here a dozen times and have been pleased.

I took the positive reviews on Yelp to give Aka Tom-Bo a try. This Japanese restaurant has a nice patio seating area in front and a somewhat old but clean seating area inside including a small sushi bar. The lunch specials range from $6-8 and are good sized. Their miso soup is a bit watered down but their nigiri and maki more than makes up for it. The presentation is nice (just like the picture in the menu) and service was very quick. I was greeted by nice smiles and friendly welcomes. I will have to come back for dinner to try more of their maki rolls.

There are a couple of reasons why AKA Tom-Bo stands out from the crowd of sushi restaurants in this town:
First, the goma ae. I've been to places, otherwise fairly good, where the goma ae came as a not-quite-thawed-yet cube obviously sawed off a block of frozen spinach, with peanut sauce glopped over it. Okay, granted, all the elements were there, but the presentation is just a little... lacking. But here, the peanut sauce is worked right through the spinach. It may be a small thing, but it's the small things which make the difference between merely acceptable and great.
Second, the bento boxes. In most places, bento boxes offer you a selection of sushi, tempura, a salad, and either beef or chicken teriyaki on rice. Here, the teriyaki comes on a bed of bean sprouts. What's the difference? Well, aside from adding that much more variety to the meal, for a diabetic like me, using bean sprouts instead of rice lowers the carbohydrate level of the meal from nearly toxic to merely unwise. (If they offered sushi made with brown rice, I could afford to eat here more often.)
Oh, yeah. The tea is excellent.
I will say that every time I've eaten here, the service has been excellent. But then again, I always seem to pick times when the restaurant is nearly empty. I couldn't promise you service that good if the place was packed. (Or maybe I could. I don't know.)
I could complain that the price is higher than some other sushi places in town, but the food is good enough to make it worth the difference in price. -

my family went into this restaurant after seeing the chef won an award twice on the north shore. I certainly was NOT impressed at all! the sushi was not fresh and so not fresh my tummy felt funny that night. the tai's in my chirashi don were SO wet it just tasted like I was chewing a piece of rubber! I'm quite sure they soak/wet the sushi so they'd look fresher! the rice in the don was way too sweet. the noodles in the seafood pot were soggy! the place was run by Asian but not Japanese for sure, not even the chef! I would not recommend it to anyone! a HUGE disappointment!

The best sushi place for people who do not like sushi or raw fish. Seriously. They have a great choice of very westernized and canadianized sushi including a Canucks roll! If you are a fish connoisseur or if you like traditional Japanese sushi, this is definitely not the place for you. Little known special deal: if you come with 3 friends and everybody orders a roll, the Canucks roll is just $1.

One of the best sushi places we have been to. Very kind personnel and delicious sushi. Try the ocean garden roll and chirashi don. They use non-frozen, always fresh wild salmon!

We've tried almost all of the sushi places....Aka Tombo has always been our favorite...but we feel like we have to give another place a chance once in awhile.....NEVER again. Despite trusting others opinions, we have found, after following their advice, that nothing compares to our favorite place! Try it for lunch...so very inexpensive...actually too much food for one! Delivery is quick, everyone who works there is polite and most have been there for years. We love it. The North SHore roll is my favorite :)
