"I fly for pie" says the slogan for this bustling Chilliwack diner.
For pilots in training or for those who decide to spend a leisurely day flying a Cessna around MetroVan, it`s well known in the local flying community to hit up Chilliwack for some delicious pie at the Airport Coffee Shop.
With over a dozen pies to choose from, be prepared to have your taste buds tantalized! Signature pies include the Lemon Meringue, Coconut Banana, Raspberry-Rhubarb, Blueberry, Bumbleberry, and German Apple. They`re freshly baked pies made on location and with real shortening. Yum! Cost: $4-6 /slice.
I had the Raspberry-Rhubarb: "Flaky fresh crust with loads of raspberry-rhubarb filling" - It fixed my sweet tooth for the day!
The all-day-breakfast and lunch menu are reasonably priced and typical for a diner. I had the corn beef on rye with a side salad ($8). It was fine. It's really all about the pie ;)
The name of this place is pretty lame. I`m sure they would bring in so many more customers if they changed the name to something sexier. And with the little amount of reviews on here for it, I'm not even sure of the locals know about it. Either way, this is one hot spot you want to check out! -

This review is about the pie! Their regular fare is 2 stars at best. Their pie is 4 star fare.
Do not eat a meal here. They serve frozen re-heated/microwaved McCain-style meals.
Strangely, given their super crappy regular fare, you'd expect frozen McCain or Sara Lee pies to punctuate their culinary diarrhea.
But no. That is not the case. These pies are homemade. And they have variety. There are all the berry varieties you're familiar with. The blueberry, the blackberry, the gooseberry. They have apple. And there are the fruit/rhubarb variants too. Peach pies too. They don't have every single type available constantly. They seem to come in every hour or so, no doubt from some elderly lady's kitchen, put together with loving care. It is best not to set your mind on a particular pie, because there is no guarantee it will be available when you arrive. But they always seem to have four or five to choose from.
If you're in Vancouver, if you love short road trips and you love pies, you should head to the Chilliwack Airport for some delicious pie. -

When my wife and I decided to head to Osoyoos for the weekend, my first thought was, "Hey, that means we're driving through Chilliwack. I've never been to Chilliwack, but I hear they have some damn good pie!" Sad, but true. It didn't take a lot of convincing to get my wife to agree to a pit stop for pie only an hour into our road trip.
We ordered lunch, but what we were really there for was the pie. Lunch was okay. I've had better, but who cares about that. Let's talk pie! We ordered a slice of German apple with a scoop of ice cream. OMG! It was so freaking good. We swooned for the next 24 hours about the pie. Too bad because by the time we came to our senses to call the Airport Coffee Shop to reserve a pie or two to pick up on our way back home, they'd stopped taking orders.
But hey, we didn't take no for an answer. We came back on Monday and just ordered slices to go. The pumpkin was okay. I think I'll stick to the other fruit pies the next time. Oh, there will be a next time! -

2-stars for service
2-stars for lunch
4.5 stars for pie. Yeeeah.
My husband read about the Chilliwack Airport Coffee Shop in the Georgia Straight several weeks ago, and was excited to take me there. Sure, it's a 45-120 minute drive in the wrong direction from anything (unless you're driving to the Okanagan or Toronto), but we like to take random drives to yummy food things.
Our visit coincided with reasonable lunch eating time, so we decided to eat a meal there pre-pie. Our meals were decidedly not great -- I don't imagine that they're supposed to be. Despite the lunching hour, 90% of the other customers were only there for pie. Mental note for next time: don't waste your time eating normal food at this place.
Another downside of eating real food before pie? Watching the pie flavours of the day disappear from the menu board. Unfortunately, our server was the most flustered lady in the joint, and constantly forgot about us. It appeared that she was just frantically speed-walking randomly throughout the restaurant, out to the patio, then into the kitchen in some sort of random middle-aged woman circuit. This was particularly frustrating, as the pie menu dwindled down from about a dozen yummy options to about four decidedly less appealing flavours. Eventually, she did clear our plates and offered us some pie.
At this point, a miracle happened. As we're about to order from the lackluster selection, one of the other servers adds "strawberry-rhubarb" and "peach-blueberry" to the board. We excitedly ordered one of each.
I have to say, that after the crappy meal, the shitty service, and um....interesting valley atmosphere, the pie made it worth our while. It was delicious. It was not what I expected, though. They are renowned for their pie crusts, and I had assumed it would be a sugar-topped dough. Instead, it was a super light, flaky, noticeably sweet, yellow-tinged crust without the yummy sugar top that I was looking forward to. Very interesting. I had the strawberry-rhubarb, and the filling was gorgeously chunky and sweet, but not overly so.
Overall, it wasn't that great of an experience, but again, the pie is most definitely the star of the show. If you decide to make the trek out to the Wack for this place, make sure you don't shit around -- just order pie. It will be worth the trip.
