Review from Annie W.
Growing up on Archie comics I always imagined what it'd be like to sip milkshakes on a hot summer day at the Chok'lit Shoppe! So when Acme opened up it was like a childhood dream come true. It's probably a good thing that there's no apron wearing Pop Tate to let me run a never-ending Jughead tab here - I'd never leave.
I came here for brunch with some girlfriends and we sampled the Daily Quiche, Italian Panini, and the Baked Eggs Scramble. Everyone was very happy with the main dishes, but sides that came with the quiche & sandwich fell a little short of expectations. The tomato soup was kind of bland, and I'd asked that my salad be replaced with some of the almond slaw every other review raves about....maybe it's just me, but it tasted like regular old slaw with a handful of cranberries thrown in.
Then of course there was the pie...oh heavenly banana cream pie how you have changed the course of my waistline for the wider. It's all it's chalked up to be, order it without hesitation. -

I went here for lunch and unlike a lot of spots in gastown I was able to grab a seat pretty much right away. The girl who sat me and took my order was nice enough and said she'd be right back. This is where it went downhill. Took her forever to come back and take my order. Once i ordered the chicken club it took forever to show up. Also, I had kind of assumed that "Sandwhich and chips" meant chips in the "french fry" sense but turns out it was potato chips. Not a huge deal, just not what I was expecting.
So the sandwich was small but it was tasty and so was the coleslaw. The biggest problem other than the slow service is that I could have gone to Nestors around the corner and had the same thing for WAY less cash. Seriously, nearly 20$ for a sandwich, potato chips and a coke (and to be fair, including tax and tip) is a bit much. -
Review from Deanna S.
I felt like this needed to be updated since I've been back here plenty of times since the last and my 5-star review still stands.
For the past few weeks, I've been experimenting with a few different pubs, cafes, restaurants, etc... and I've been disappointed. This past weekend, when it came time to decide where to go for dinner on Saturday night, my boyfriend Cooper and I decided to play it safe and go to Acme where we know we'll have great food and excellent service.
I had the open-faced roast beef sandwich, and he had the chicken club, both with chips and slaw on the side. We'd forgotten how great the slaw was. The dried cranberries and almonds are a fantastic addition to coleslaw. I've never had this anywhere else, and it makes the world of a difference. Seriously, it's rare that I get excited about a side, let alone, coleslaw... but this stuff is seriously the best coleslaw I've ever had EVER. Sorry Grandma, but your famous recipe served at all family BBQ's for the past 60 years has been bumped down to #2 on my list.
After much debate, we ordered a slice of chocolate cream pie for dessert. Of all the choices I was leaning more towards the cherry balsamic pie, but Coop hates cherry anything, so he denied me that option. Our slice came, he took one look at it and said, "I don't want to share this with you... you can get your own slice.".......!!!!!!!! So I went up and ordered myself a slice of the balsamic cherry pie... and I was so happy with my choice! It was tangy and delicious. Coop even tried it, and liked it! Yay!
We left completely satisfied.
In fact, we were so satisfied that we came back the next night!
I had the High Falutin' Grilled Cheese, and he had his classic chicken club.
I don't know why I had never ordered this grilled cheese before... I love brie. No... I LOVE brie. I could eat an entire wheel of brie... in fact, I pretty much have-- multiple times. One of my favourite dishes of all time, is a baked brie. Seriously, I love brie. Get it? And I love grilled cheese. So this was definitely one of my most favourite grilled cheeses I've ever had (sorry Acme, but I have to say-- I make a mean grilled cheese myself, and I'm not ready to surrender my own self-proclaimed best grilled cheese title up to you just yet). The cranberry relish really complimented the brie. It was SO good. I will definitely be ordering that again.
For dessert I got a slice of lemon meringue pie, and Coop had a slice of coconut cream. My slice had a perfect balance of sweet and tart.... and I don't know how the coconut cream was because Coop and I are not on dessert sharing terms when we go to Acme anymore (but I've tried it on another occasion and it was also great).
Before leaving, I decided to take a look at the treats at the till. The cookies looked really good, and I almost bought some snickerdoodle's (I think that was what they were called...) but I had reached my junk food quota for the day and didn't trust myself to save them for later.
Seriously, Acme is one of my favourite spots in Vancouver. It's super cool, yet quaint, friendly, and inviting. I've never been disappointed! If you've yet to try it out, please do!Listed in: Eats

Review from Rheanna F.
Vancouver, BC
I came in here once wanting to get a quick, cheap bite to eat on the go... and after looking at the menu I turned around and found food elsewhere. Just a glance at the menu told me that Acme isn't the place to come if you want a cheap, no frills sandwich to eat on the go (that would be Save On Meats next door!) it's the place you come when you want to have a nice sit down meal you can really savor! I finally made it back here with some friends before work and it definitely lived up to my expectations!
I had the bean and meat caselette... or was it a casorolette? I don't know, all i know is that it sounded like casserole, and neither of the two friends I was with knew what it was either! Turns out it's just more of a stew, but either way though, it was mega tasty and very filling! It came with a side salad that had some DELICIOUS sesame-tasting dressing on it, so i felt like i had a pretty healthy meal! One friend got a pot pie that definitely could have fed two people, and the other got the meatloaf. She gave us all a bite of it since it was so good and... holy shit was it was GOOD!!
I had a cappuccino to drink, and boy oh boy was it delish! It was a double espresso shot and very strong, so by the time I got to work i was incredibly twitchy. I think next time i order anything with espresso there i will get it to go, even if i am eating in, that way i can slowly drink it over a few hours instead of shocking my body with 100000 volts of caffeine!! -

Oh my god the pie. I absolutely love Acme, I love the staff, I love the food, I love the location. The prices are a little high, especially when you compare to Save on Meats but still, the pie and food make up for it.
I was craving lemon meringue pie after having been working all day and having exhausted every other idea in my head, I went to Acme to find some pie. I sat down and ordered some pie and a pint of beer. As I worked and sipped my beer I waited. for my pie The server was super sweet and we chatted about work and the weather and then my pie arrived. God himself couldn't have crafted a better pie. The crust perfect, the meringue tangy, the lemon...melt in your mouth.
There are a lot of places in the city that serve pie, but Acme takes the cake....
I adore Acme. -

They offer some gluten free sweets and can make sandwiches on gluten free bread so I had to check it out. The food was just ok and thought it was a little over priced.

I enjoyed my experience eating at Acme when they first opened. But on several occasions I returned, I didn't find the love anymore. Food was still great, but there seemed to be this rule to 'pack the booths for larger crowd' that really irked me (we asked to be sat on an 'empty booth' but was told that there were only two of us and they booth is for the larger crowd!!! OMG!! Are you kidding me???). Also, if you're going for "Open Kitchen" concept, please make sure to tell your staff that they're on microscope. It's a major turn off to actually see kitchen staff touching food without gloves!

Review from Joyce VanFoodies L.
Vancouver, BC
Their menu is fairly simple, with a menu for breakfast, lunch, and supper; main features being on sandwiches and paninis. So we ordered a chicken club sandwich and a veggie panini and a strawberry milkshake. They came with a side of broccoli and almond slaw, as well as chips, for my friend's panini. I got their daily soup (fennel).
My chicken club sandwich was good, though the bread was toasted too long for my liking, especially without any kind of condiments other than mustard and a bit of sun dried tomato mayo. The fennel soup was a strange green shade and it made me a little nervous as I've never had fennel before, but it was actually a very nice surprise.
Overall, the service was fast (there weren't that many people) and the servers seemed pretty laid back for the most part. It's a bit of a hipster hangout, but without the attitude. Will definitely return to try some of their other items and maybe a slice of pie.

With great food and interesting decor, this is a great choice for brunch in gastown.

Acme Café is bringing back the vintage-era of diners.. one ice cream float at a time!
I've heard a lot of positive things from my peers about Acme and after driving by this place numerous times, I decided to settle on some grub and coffee. After parking my car and walking down the wrong street into the derelict part of town, I was glad to find safe refuge within the confines of the Acme Café.
The décor takes you back in time to when stars like Buddy Holly and James Dean took their ladies and friends out for a snack - can't forget the Beach Boys either. They have diner-style booths, stools and a counter that'll cater to your sweet tooth.
The entire food menu was deliciously appetizing. I went with a vegetarian panini (goat cheese, portobello mushroom, peppers, zucchini, sprouts, sun-dried tomato basil mayo on a grilled ciabatta). I never imagined something without meat can be so deliciously satisfying and fulfilling. Served with slaw and chips, I was quite full!
Would I recommend Acme Café to my friends and YOU? Heck yes! Please invite me when you decide to visit!Listed in: Places You MUST Visit!

Stopped by for lunch in March. By the time we arrived, around 1:30 or 2:00 perhaps, it was pretty quiet. Service was fast but not especially friendly. I had a roasted (grilled?) veggie sandwich with broccoli slaw and chips. Perfect good, nothing to write home about. We also took some cookies to go, again, nothing to write home about. This is the kind of place I would frequent if I was working in the area and needed to grab a quick lunch, but as a visitor to Vancouver I probably could have found something a bit more special if I'd looked a little harder!

I didn't want to like this place. I really didn't. Mainly because I am starting to take issue with the whole gentrification of the downtown eastside, not because i don't like some of the spots (i do) but for the obvious displacement issues not to mention the level of "try" for new establishments to be "hipster chic" or "nouveau-retro" or whatever we're calling it now. I would LOVE to see a place actually keep the full vibe of an older establishment and build on it as opposed to scrub it clean.
Having said all this, I really liked Acme. Yes, it's a modern diner which kinda irks me in it's "too cool for school"-ishness BUT they do not skimp on service, quality or appropriate diner-level simplicity (or pricing) of the food.
We didn't have to wait for long and once seated were very quickly brought some pretty darn good drip coffee. Usually not a huge fan of drip but this was yum. I also like the simplicity of the menu. Comfort foods (grilled cheese, mac n cheese etc.) at comfort food prices. I had the cassoulet which was pretty good although a bit too salty and a tad skimpy on the sausage/turkey. BUT the price was decent, the salad yummy (there was a pickled cucumber slice with dill that i kinda wanted a whole bowl of - so good!) and bread sticks perfect dipping accompaniment. Bill came to about $15/person. Not bad.
I will certainly be back, albeit slightly disgruntingly.Comment from Alan H. of Acme Café 2/15/2012

Great little higher end diner atmosphere.
They serve the waspy comfort food that I grew up with, but with quality ingredients.
The service was good, but I'd question whether local residents would find it very affordable or welcoming -

Such an awesome place I don't know what took me so long to come here. Diner style, with the classic stools, booths, and the tiled floor.
Simple menu with soups and sandwiches, and comfort food mains. I opted for a mac & cheese with bacon. This was pretty delicious.Creamy, cheesy, bacon-y, just the way it should be. Also, it comes with a side salad with an awesome grainy mustard dressing.
They're also licensed, so you can get a pint of beer to go with the comfort food.
Oh, did I also mention their pies? Yes, fresh made pies, everyday. I got a piece of their apple pie: perfect pieces of apples, with the cinnamon and a soft flaky crust.
Just come.Comment from Alan H. of Acme Café 10/18/2011

Very good diner food.
I walked by Acme Cafe one day on my way back from another spot and I have to be honest, when I saw the name the first thing I thought of was Wile E. Coyote.
From the outside, it looks like your average diner but what caught my eye was how busy it was. Looking up on the place online afterwards, I decided to give it a shot.
The first thing you'll notice when you walk in is prompt service. The staff there are all friendly and will get you seated ASAP and walk you through the specials. Nice and clean on the inside with a modern retro feel that teases Art Deco. it's a good place to come alone if you want to eat some tasty food and collect your thoughts or come with friends for a good chat. The music plays loud enough to hear but not loud enough to interrupt. Just right.
I've been here about 5 times and have ordered the Chicken Club on multigrain just about every single time; not sure if I could ever get sick of it! With a choice of slaw & chips or soup of the day, the portions are just right. The best part is you don't get the sluggish/tired feeling you get from eating say... White Spot's Chicken Club.
Few warnings on dessert: they'll either tell you what it is when you're done eating and it'll sound so good that you can't say no (for me it was a Chocolate Espresso Pecan Cream Pie. How can you say no?) or if you're sitting at the round table, they show off the pies & cakes of the day so you can stare it at when you're done eating.
Consistent, friendly service to go along with good food and nice atmosphere.
Worth checking out! -

I admit it, I've got a soft spot for this place. Stopped in for lunch and had the meatloaf sandwich and it didn't disappoint. They were nice enough to make an exception for the wife and give her a late brunch. Too bad they're getting busier. Guys, tries the pies. They're great.
We were there the day the clowns from Occupy Vancouver stopped in to use the washroom and stole a half dozen rolls of toiletpaper. It took a awhile, but I finally found some time to slip in for a quick lunch. I would have something more insightful to say except I'm too busy recovering from the whole Cioppino Bread Bowl I mowed down PLUS the full order of Mac Cheese I got on the side.
I ate the WHOLE thing! Seriously I ate EVERYTHING!! That's how good it was and I'm hoping that fact alone is enough of a positive endorsement for this great place :) GO if you haven't yet. I will be returning for sure to try to fit everything else in ma belleh.Listed in: I HEART Food!

Banana cream pie? Big Win. Food? Soso.
Let's start with saviour. Seeing a cross section of the Banana Cream pie behind the diner counter while we ate our lunch was too tempting. The filling was just perfect. Never had one this good. Pastry had mom's touch. Next party I'm gonna buy a whole pie.
The high-falutin' grilled cheese tainted my childhood gooey grilled cheese memories. For me, the cheese has to stretch for infinity after each bite. Their's just didn't. Cranberry relish kind of killed the cheese taste, the whole point of a grilled cheese. If they threw turkey meat in there, that'd be ok. I got the daily soup, curried veggie, which was decent.
My table partner had the meat loaf plate which comes with gravy, 3 types potatoes, and greens. Meat loaf was seasoned ok, but was kind of dry. Gravy somewhat fixed that. She also ordered a side of mac & cheese (overpriced @ $4.25 for a small bowl). Kraft Dinner tasted better.
I'll stick to their desserts. -

What to say about this neighborhood fave:
The staff are amazing, really friendly, always remember you face and just overall super. The food is always delish! Fresh, yummy and the perfect comfort food for any time of day and they honestly have the best London Fogs in the city. I take out of town friends here because it never lets us down. The atmosphere is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner (especially at night if you want to go out and eat but don't want the lounge or clubby vibe while you're chowing down). You can go in your sweats even and just relax while eating their always amazing dinner special. Finish off any meal with any one of their tasty baked goods or yummy pies. A definite winner! -
Review from Linzi M.
The only bad thing about Acme Cafe is that it took me 9 months to find it.
One of the things I love in this world is diners; the booths, the seats at the counter, the refillable coffee and the pies. But diners are always bad, aren't they? And not in a 'it's so bad but so good', kind of way. Just bad in a stale pie and burnt coffee way.
Acme Cafe is not that type of beast. Sure it's a diner, but it's a hipster diner! Lawdy lawdy Miss Scarlett, I've come home!
Polished steel, clean white surfaces, typography, and gorgeous printed photos on the wall. And is that Etta James on the stereo? Damn, Acme, you know how to play me just right!
I came for the pie. Lemon meringue. Listed as one of the 100 things to eat in Vancouver. And yes it is. It was perfection. And the refillable diner coffee was fantastic too. Acme, I want to be in you forever! -

Acme's breakfast croissant might be the best breakfast under $10 in the city. I really haven't gotten to the rest of the menu because I just eat this thing over and over. Sometimes I also grab a plain croissant to go when I leave.

This is a long overdue review for one of my favourite casual restaurants in Vancouver! This old school diner hits it out of the park with 5 stars for decor, service, and food. Alan is one of the co-owners and runs the Twitter account. If you get a chance to chat with him, he'll often tell you about where and how the food was made which is always nice to know.
I mainly come here for dinner and tuck into classics like meatloaf and grilled cheese sammys and always make sure to save room for a slice of pie (or three) at the end. Oh and if you're feeling like an extra sweet tooth, the homemade oreo cookies are amazing. -
Review from Nicole F.
The universe was dead set against me having eggs benny the weekend I went to Acme. I tried to get the Baked Eggs Benny with no ham, but because it's more of a frittata cut out of a pan into a square (actually, that's exactly what it is) I couldn't sub the ham for anything.
My friend ordered it and she said it was really really good, but not at all a benny aside from the Hollendaise.
I went with the Baked Egg Scramble which looked pretty decent. They were happy to make it without mushrooms for me. Aside from the bland hashbrowns it was really really good. I'd order it again for sure.
We both felt like being as fat as possible so we got the milkshakes with espresso shots. YOU NEED TO DO THIS. Her vanilla espresso shake was TO DIE FOR and my chocolate one was intense. SO INTENSE. IN A GOOD WAY.Listed in: BRUNCH

I'm a sucker for diners and Acme was great. I wish I could eat here more often but i'm not always around in the neighbourhood. My friend and I were looking for a quick bite and decided to come here. This is an absolutely lovely little cafe in the rapidly gentrifying (aka: hipsterizing) downtown eastside. Well, at least Yelp calls it the downtown eastside; I think of it more as Gastown....
After spending a decent amount of time climbing the spiral staircase to nowhere in the Woodwards building and looking over the edge like little kids (we may or may not have been doing this for an embarrassingly long length of time...), my best friend and I decided that it was time to grab a bite to eat. I remembered the Acme Cafe was only a block away and I had always wanted to try it, since I used to gaze out of the windows of the bus and stare at it each day on my trip to work.
Upon entering we were seated at a delightful little spot next to the window. After looking through the (reasonably priced) menu, we decided to split the grilled cheese and the vegetarian sandwiches. Now, I know these are relatively simple items to make, but they were great. Nay, a la Will Ferrell, I'll say they were "scrumtrelescent." The veggie sandwich was particularly good, with goat cheese, portobello mushrooms, zucchini, red peppers and sprouts. It was like a party in my mouth, and everyone was invited. Except meat... nope, meat wasn't invited. The sandwiches were served with homemade broccoli-almond slaw and chips. Although I'm usually not a big slaw fan in general, theirs was pretty darn good.
This cafe is worth a stop if you're in the 'hood. The staff are all funky and friendly, and I hear their pie is out-of-this-world. Acme Cafe, you'll see me again because I (in my best Cartman voice) NEED MORE PIE!Listed in: Hipster Hangouts

I do believe the Acme Cafe is everything a diner should be. Its comforting and calming and clean. Great coffee. Killer pie. Daily specials. Mac and cheese. Meatloaf. Chicken Pot Pie! And for some true nostalgia, they serve Pop Shoppe in a variety of flavours.
I could go on and on. Acme is simply the best - my favourite spot for a relaxed, comfort food dinner or a bite before a movie. (But I'm not a fan of lining up to eat, so I haven't been here for lunch - it's much quieter in the afternoon and evening.) I have also found it a good place for when I'm dining solo, since they have counter seating at the horseshoe-shaped bar and plenty of newspapers and magazines to read.
The neighbourhood is what some might consider rough, but it's changing too, and I think that it also makes for interesting people watching if you're sitting at the window table.
And I often can't leave without picking up some baked goods by the till for late-night snacks or breakfast - sandwich cookies are to-die!Listed in: One on the town, Diners, Star for a day

Stopped by ACME yesterday for a lunch time business meeting.
I had the house salad with baby shrimp and the mustard vinaigrette. This salad was HUGE and only $12.50. It came with chickpeas, beansprouts, roasted red peppers, baby shrimp, lettuce, and arugula.
My colleague had the daily quiche - I tried a little bite and was blown away. Likely the best quiche I've ever tried.
We were seated at the bar right in front of all the pies. Although we didn't have dessert, everything looked incredible.

MEH
that is how i must rate this place: MEH!
we arrived during an 'Occupy' protest at a development next door to the Acme, no fault of the cafe though it ended up making the most interesting part of dinner (not a good sign)
i had the turkey sandwich with soup. my wife had the meatloaf sandwich with 'slaw'.
the turkey sandwich was ok. the soup was ok = MEH. both lacked flavor and a real *punch*. thats all i can really say, it just left me feeling like i could have spent $7 instead on this same meal at an industrial park cafe, you know the kind? by the warehouses?
my wife's meatloaf sandwich was a little better, maybe im being harsh on it because it ranked low on my meatloaf scale (is that whitemeat?), but overall it wasnt a meal-saver for me.
we pointed out to our server that my wife's 'slaw' was hot. and we could see from the open-concept kitchen that it was being kept on the counter dressed! our server tried a few arguments but the slaw eventually went in the cooler. common mistake about food poisoning: its the salad not the beef.
after that our server ignored us, or was afraid of us. a kitchen staff started waiting us and even brought us more drinks.
she came around at bill time and was tipped well. maybe she was busy, maybe shes shy. i dunno, maybe we imagined the whole thing.
we did not have PIE. maybe this was a mistake.
in closing i would say: average. nothing great. there's better sandwich shops for less. though i would go back if you asked me out for dinner and thats the important part. -
Review from Reena M.
I came here for an early breakfast with some friends that were leaving town. It was good, but I can't say it was the best. Predominantly because they don't have a grill, so all the egg dishes are baked. That does make for an interesting version of Eggs Benny and omelets/frittatas, and it's probably healthier. However, none of us were blown away by it.
I would come back for another meal. It seems sandwiches, soups, and quiches are quite good here.
They do have good baked goods and coffee! And I really liked the atmosphere/layout of the place. But it is in a sketchy area--it was the first time I got harassed by a DTES-er. -

This diner is delightful. Great design, like, super cute and clean and not intimidating. Simple, but full menu, with great options for breakfast, lunch and dinner times. I've eaten eggs with toast and potatoes and the Baked Egg Scramble, which combines all breakfast needs (goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms and potatoes) in one handy, filling and tasty, eggy combo.
For lunch, both the classic grilled cheese and the high-falutin' grilled cheese were comfort food goldmines. The veggie sandwich is also a winner and my manfriend has enjoyed the meat loaf sandwich. Paired with chips and broccoli, almond coleslaw (yup, it's the right thing to do), and I'd call that a meal.
Look at me, saving the best for last. Now I speak of their delicious pies, of which I've sampled the lemon meringue (killer tang, sky-high meringue and buttery crust with just a little flake), some kind of chocolate on chocolate dream of chocolatey goodness (cookie crumb crust and smooth whipped topping) and a slab of mixed berry (again, lovely crust and fruity-goodness). Also, the slices are basically the size of a toddler's head. Perfect.
On a weekend there's a line for the brunch crowd, but if you have time I say stick it out. Because you will be rewarded. With pie.Comment from Alan H. of Acme Café 5/13/2011

Average sandwiches, great service, nice ambience, worth a try, but nothing to write home about... Skip the coleslaw and chips and go for the soup!

I ate here today. and had the meatloaf sandwich, with brocolli slaw, and potato chips.. oh, and a can of coke. Moderate lunch... not so moderate price... Bill was $16 bucks... eep... Food was good, Meatloaf was cooked aswesome, and the bun was fresh... * chips were a little stale... but could definately find a quicker, and more moderately priced lunch. Cool environment, and great smells, as they bake everything on site. Service was good, and I will probably go back... but more for dinner.
All in all, great place for home cooking, and a touch of nostalgia... just go after payday ;) -

Me and a friend went for the pie. I walked in and looked at the menu and saw no dessert section, so I was a bit wary. The waitress came over and described some delectable lunch specials, and the menu looked delicious. We asked her what kind of pie they had, and she listed off about 10 different kinds! I chose the peach and it was excellent. My friend had a quiche, which was also excellent. Service was top notch too. And the atmosphere is a perfect blend of old-school diner and clean-white minimalist, with lots of natural light and some cozy booths.
YUM! Can't wait to go back!
