I've walked by this place a bazillion times on my way to and from work, but on Friday I actually went in to check it out. Holy book oasis, Batman!!! This place is AWESOME!
They have a huge selection of new and used comics, which is lovely! I'm just getting into comics, so I don't always want to pay full price for something I'm unsure about. Walking into this store was like hitting the jackpot for me!
I love the sections of literature and pocket books near the front too. I think I was in there for a good half an hour and I only made it half way to the back before I had to leave to meet a friend. I wanted to leave with an armful, but I restrained myself and just bought a young adults paperback and a Batman comic ($5.95 total). I can't wait to go back!!!Listed in: Book Nerds of Vancouver,…

Review from Rick C.
I love comic books. ABC is a great place to pick up new and old comic books as well as old books, especially those you can't find anywhere else.
The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and nice. They have huge bins of old comics at $1 a piece as well as tons of old magazines. Comics are sold at par with US prices, which is a great deal.
One problem is you probably would not go there as a comic newbie and browse. It's a very crowded, "by the book" place, more about getting what you are looking for and not discovering something new. -

This is a great store if you're looking to buy a telephone directory of British Columbia from 1954. Small on the outside, the shelves go far back into the store, deep into the recesses of old magazines, decade old harlequins, and pulp crime so old the pages are literally turning to pulp.
Every reader of trash has their own specific style of trash, and ABC caters to collectors and junkies from every category. This includes thick racks of comics in mylar bags dating back to before Wolverine joined the X-men, and almanacs on BC tourism about the upcoming Expo '86. It's just so obscure, there are back-issues of nearly every magazine for every specialized reader, some of them dating back half a century.
Can't forget fantasy books either, that is actually probably the biggest category. I didn't realize the extent of people who read about dragons-warriors-magic, not to mention the overflowing boxes of star trek books, many of them written by William Shatner. Of course these themes also carry into the store's old VHS section, hundreds of movies in a dying technology just looking for a good home before getting thrown out. -

This used book and comics store is tucked away just off South Granville Street, on Broadway Avenue. Though it's easy to miss, it may be among the best used book stores I've experienced in Vancouver, especially if you're looking for sci-fi, fantasy, or mystery novels.
ABC is cluttered with used paperbacks and comic books (though sorting through is made easier as everything is arranged alphabetically). There are dresser drawers packed with books, and shelves on all the walls extending nearly to the shop's ceiling. Be sure to check out the second floor before you leave -- it's even less tidy then the first and more titles abound!
In terms of price, most paperback novel in ABC sell for between $4 and $5. Well worth the trip if you love books.Listed in: Reading Rainbow

Though the adress is outdated, It's now on Broadway street just west of Granville. I've been buying books from this store for 20 or so years. This is it's 3rd location. It's first move was across the street from its original location. I was worried when they were moving again to some then unknown location, but they've now moved to right infront of the bus stop I take to work. Very convenient.
It's not as cheap as it used to be, but its still great fun to search for books to read there. It's part of the fun. And the cats that are lounging about are always friendly. I'll go to chapters across the street to read, but when I'm looking to buy, I come over to this wonderful indepenent.
Highly recommend -

I've been following ABC through three different locations, now, and one thing has remained consistent: a truly breathtaking selection of science fiction and fantasy. In the current store, the entire West wall of the store is crammed, literally from floor to ceiling, with everything from 50s pulps to surprisingly recent editions. The shelves start at about waist height, there are overstocks piled on top of the shelves, drawers underneath (each drawer dedicated to a specific author), and cardboard boxes on the floor. Sometimes I go in there, even when I don't have money to spend, just to drool over the books I'd like to read.

Generally I go into bookstores looking for literature, and though I didn't expect to find a treasure trove of novels I was hoping to read, find that very treasure trove I did. It may take a bit of wading through the enormous selection here, but the range of books here is impressive and therefore worth the search. There are plenty of things in this store for the lover of science fiction and fantasy in particular. There is also a selection of mystery-type paperbacks and, as the name of this store would suggest lots and lots of comic books. Since I don't know much about comics, I can't comment on the quality of the selection here, but I can tell you that in terms of quantity, there's a lot here! This store is absolutely crammed, so it is well worth it to root around until you find the thing you're looking for.
