There were a lot of concerns I had before embarking on this tour: Was it going to be worth the money? What could the tour guide provide for us that we could not get by just walking from store to store? What if there is too much history incorporated and it is boring? What if the food is too strange? Or too run of the mill?

Fortunately, Shirley's tour ended up providing a good balance of everything. I left very knowledgeable about the history of the Kensington Market area and also with a very stuffed tummy.  There are a lot of options in the Kensington Market and having a guide pick things out for your group that are tried and true allows for a larger variety of foods to try and less wasted money on things you should have passed on. The area merchants that we visited all seemed to have a close rapport with Shirley which was nice to see.

Pretty much everyone on our tour (6 people) were foodies, too, which just added to great discussion and knowledge sharing.

History

Established in 1993

Culinary Historian, Shirley Lum, also Founder/Owner/Guide extraordinaire went off-the-beaten-path while travelling solo 21/2 months in Europe on her bicycle in 1988, and decided to welcome all walks of life to the different ways of exploring her own unique city called Toronto. Her motto is reflected by Marcel Proust's quote about learning new things: "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes". Every Foodies, Literary Detective and Ghost walks kicks off with that beautiful quote.
