My first trip to A Taste of India was not a success, I really didn't enjoy the food at all. When I was at Scotia Square today looking to try another vendor who turned out to not be open I saw a sign for Dosa, something I had heard several people rave about but had never tried. For a couple bucks, I figured what the hell.
I ordered the Dosa with potato Masala and since my Mango Lassi lady was not at the market this morning had to grab one of them here to wash down dinner.
For those who do not know what Dosa is is a fermented crepe which you can get just on it's own, or as I did stuffed with something, in my case potato masala or spiced potatoes. It was huge, I mean it was the biggest crepe I had ever seen. It was stuffed full of potato masala. The thing had to weight a pound. It came with two sauces, one was a lentil based one which was okay, but nothing I would have again, the other was a chili coconut sauce which was out of this world. A good amount of heat, balanced with the creamy coconut milk. It was fabulous!
The mango lassi was also wonderful, just as good and cheaper then my usual mango lassi at the market. Mango lassi is just a mixture of mango puree, yogurt, milk or water and probably some sugar but we can not think about that. It is so tasty and a cup of it at Taste of India is $1.75.
A plain dosa was like $3, I think my potato masala one was $3.80 something. With tax for the dosa and lassi it was $6.52. Just insanely cheap and oh so delicious. It gets my vote for the best lunch under $10 in the city!Listed in: With a Little Help From My…

Okay, so clarification - the four stars for quick food court lunch food. Context, people, context!
I eat at Scotia Square regularly, and that means I'm at Taste of India at least once a week. I have no idea what to call any of the dishes, except delicious. And cheap! Tandoori chicken stuffs me to the gills for $5.25. The buffet is yum yum yum. Staff are nice and efficient. All the dishes are very flavourful and many don't skimp on the spice. The food here is actually tastier than more expensive Indian places. -

Coming from Malaysia where Malay, Chinese and Indians makes up the 3 main races, I am familiar with Indian cuisines. And sometimes, being homesick forces me to seek out food that reminds me of home. A Taste of India and its dishes, is a place where a person like me can easily invoke the memories of my home, where I can simply go to any Indian shops that flood the city of Kuala Lumpur and order Indian rice serve on banana leaf. Of course they do not serve them on banana leaf here, but the food does strike a chord. Oh yeah, did I mention cheap too? You really get a decent amount for the price you pay. And for a small eater like me, that's easily 2 meals for the day.

Oh Indian food, you are so delicious, it's kinda like sushi, I never really get tired of it. Could eat butter chicken and curried chick peas every day. It's weird that I never manage to make any of that myself at home though.
But, as compensation for my lazy cooking, there's a Taste of India! And for $7, you really can't argue with this place. The buffet style food is always fresh and there's always a good selection of Indian favourites to choose from. Obviously, I always choose butter chicken, curried chickpeas and saffron rice. Oh, there was that one time I got the spinach/tomato/cheesey stuff (yeah, my ability to remember correct names for anything is pretty minimal). But then I promptly spilled it down the front of myself, assumed it was bad luck for veering from my usual order, and never got it again. But I bet it was awesome, before I got spill-y.
Oh, and a quick note: the reason my lunch is $2 more than a regular lunch special -- two words: mango lassi. Do it. Do it now. They are the BEST. Yogourt/mango deliciousness in a cup. Man, perfect complement to my lunch.
So, to wrap up: like cheap, delicious food? Downtown? Get your butt to Taste of India. And enjoy.Listed in: 30 Days of Yelp

This place was a great little surprise in a bustling mall! The food was flavorful and spicy. I kept going back up to the counter to fill my little cup with more chutney.
I was initially met with a surly look and the staff clearly was not happy with the questions I was asking about their menu, but once I ordered I was completely satisfied with the food, and knew I had made the right choice between all the different wonderful stands in the food court.
I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants a quick bit of flavor while exploring Halifax's downtown. -

I worked in Scotia Square for 3 years and when I couldnt get homemade indian food from my brown mama, this is where I would go! I can't get over the prices - cheaaaaaaaaap. Unlike some other indian restos in the city, you arent paying with your firstborn for a meal. My indian aunties came to visit from Toronto and proclaimed the daal to the the best they have ever had! Rowwwwwr! The buffet is amazing as are the dosas.. now im hungry!

For this price, it can't get any better than this! Not a whole lot of options but the few options that they have are awesome!
The place is inside Scotia Square food court so it's not a restaurant. You can get a decent meal for only $5 (or $6.5 with a pop).
It's good to have some cash on you when you go there as they don't accept credit cards and they charge a quarter for debit. -

I think this is actually my favourite place to eat in Halifax (minus the setting of Scotia Square!). The price is, as many have said, almost too cheap, and the food is consistently delicious (although sometimes spicier than others-- which is AWESOME!) and unbeatable. I've been to the higher-priced Indian restaurants in Halifax and I've never been as satisfied as the food from Taste of India satisfies me.
We usually get the same thing every time we go-- the vegetable combo (usually chana masala, vegetable curry, yellow cabbage, rice and a pappadum) and it's only $5! ONLY FIVE FRIGGIN' DOLLARS! What a bargain! The potatoes in the curry taste so damned amazing-- I can never replicate this at home! The samosa is also huge, filling and delicious and is usually quite sufficient for a snack on the run.
I love introducing friends to this place, as it's accessible, affordable and warming to the soul. The owners are always so genuinely happy to see delighted returning customers. They're also happy to put your food in reusable containers. They ask us where ours are if we don't have them ;)
Taste of India is one of the main reasons I wish I lived closer to downtown. It's the best Indian food around. Although the recipes are obviously what makes this food excellent, I honestly believe the amazing people who cook these meals impart something extra special to the food with their warming smiles.Listed in: Vegetable Valhalla

I love this place. The food is so good and so cheap I sometimes feel guilty I'm not paying more.
Its my favorite place for lunch. I recommend the lemon rice, dahl, and boneless chicken as my prefered combo but you can't go wrong. The fried chicken (on monday's) and the green beans are also delightful!! -

Taste of India is a surprise in the world of food courts. A family-operated Indian take out counter at the Scotia Square mall, it serves up some of the best Indian food in the city for bargain prices.
Dishes include veggie combinations and a variety of meats including halal beef. Specials are switched up daily. My favourite is the Tuesday lamb curry, big chunks of lamb with potato in a medium spicy sauce. That combined with your choice of white or lemon rice, some chickpeas and veggies, and a tiny slice of papadum will set you back less than $8. There's so much food I usually have leftovers for the next day's lunch.
Wednesday through Friday there is a buffet. If you're a buffet fan (I'm not), that's a great value. For under $7, you get a big helping of food.
All the food appears homemade. And aside from the staples of curries, rice and butter chicken, there are also little delights like the delicious mango lassi and the masala dosas which take a bit longer to prepare but are worth the wait.
Its Scotia Square location certainly does not make it the Taj Mahal by any means, but the "Indian Place" as my work friends and I call it is an enjoyable, affordable departure from standard food court fare. -
Review from Lacey H.
I'm a serious fan of Indian buffets and this place makes my taste buds zing and sing in all the right ways. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, this surprisingly busy food court restaurant serves an all you can pile on your plate buffet! For about $9 I treated myself to an assortment of veggie curries, a samosa and a scoop of rice, plus a soda.
The line moves efficiently and the people working at the shop are helpful and friendly. I had a fantastic chickpea dish today, and another spicy chunky veggie curry which was fantastic. It's not the best Indian food around, but the price is right and so is the speed.
If you head in at lunch time, it's bound to be packed but you're also guaranteed mounds of fresh food and employees who are prepared for the heat of the rush. This place is fantastic and a nice alternative to the average food court offerings.
