We have used their training services, Lisa is fantastic, and gave us a ton of tips that have really helped us work better with our dogs.  They are notably much more well behaved, as friends have told me, and way easier to manage.  They have a calmer demeanor, and all this after only 2 sessions.  Dog training with A Leg Up is worth the investment.

Most recently, and a trip away, left with no one around to watch my beloved pups - I turned to A Leg up for help.  I called only 4 days in advance of my departure, and they were able to find accommodation!  Yay - they girls were taken to a farm up in the Hockley Valley area, with lots of room to run and roam around, access to water, if they want to go for a swim....

My dogs were dropped off at my house, complete with a little report card of how they did.  I've noticed a change in them - they are more affectionate, and are muI really think they loved it - and if they could talk, they'd be asking me when I'm going away next so they can go back!

I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in the service from this company. This is the first time I've ever written a Yelp review, but because my pets lives were at stake I feel very strongly about this.

When I returned home from being across the country for 2 weeks, my cats food and water bowls were completely EMPTY! That was a terrible shock and it completely unacceptable.

In addition, I had a terrible time getting any kind of feedback on how my cats were doing while I was away. I phoned 3 times - and each time my information was taken down and I was told I would be contacted. When I wasn't I sent an email after which I got a VERY  brief update, in which they didn't even refer to the names of my cats.

In addition, when I petted my cat Milo, his hair shed all over the place, that only happens when cats haven't been touched and he clearly had not been petted once in the two weeks.

I also really didn't like that they refused to make a home visit before my departure to meet the cats and let me show them where everything was kept etc.

I will NEVER use them again. Next time I will go with an independent carer.
If you are at all concerned with the welfare of your pet, do not use this company.

We have been using A Leg Up for 3 months now.  We started out doing twice a day puppy visits, which were conducted solo by the same person every day.  This was great to get our pup used to being home while we were at work, it was great for crate training, housebreaking, and socialization as well.  This was $27 per day.

After all the shots were completed we went to 1 1hour walk per day, with other dogs.  ($17 a day).  This is certainly the best way to get your dog well excercsed and tired out!

The walkers here leave a journal entry every day, to let you know if the dog had any #1's or #2's, who they played with, and what they did.

We've used A Leg Up on a number of occasions. Each time we're left wanting more. I showed up one day (with them knowing that I was supposed to be out of town) and the dogs hadn't been walked, 2 hours after I had been told they would. When I called to inquire, no one answered the phone, which is par for the course.

We have also used them on a number of in home pet stays. While the actual care takers have been friendly (especially Danny, who is no longer with them), they are not allowed to contact you (or you them) to find out how things are going. After some negotiating we convinced them to use our home phone to call us and give daily updates. In this day and age, how hard is it to send an e-mail or an SMS/MMS letting you know how the dogs are doing?

The response time from the main office is also very poor. They either do not reply or will reply days/weeks later when they do. Also, when you have scheduled a weekend walk and there is a problem, there is no one to cover during the weekend. They are closed.

All in all I think A Leg Up is a poor service that really doesn't go the extra mile for the dogs. The dogs are simply viewed as a revenue stream. I expect more for my family.

History

Established in 1999

Strangely, we originally started A Leg Up to raise capital for two other ventures (a production company and an environmental foundation), but it became soon our main focus, eclipsing the other organizations completely. It's only in the last year that we realized why. It was because we could see how valuable the service we were offering to pet owners had become.
You could hear it in their voices and in the initial meetings - the relief that they showed in recognizing that the company we created was one they could rely on to provide the same kind of care for their pet as they would if they could be around to do it themselves.
It felt good to know we could offer that. And we take real pride in continuing to deliver service to that level.

Meet the Business Owner: Teslin R.

Okay. So Teslin's an Australian Shepherd and not actually the business owner - although he acts like it sometimes.
But he is one of the owner's pup. Nigel's part-owned and run the business since 1999 and owned Teslin for half of that time. Obviously a dog lover, Nigel fully understands the needs and questions his clients have. And over the years, he's learned so much not only about our canine friends, but about the dynamics between dog and owner. Every relationship is a little different, but what he's learned doesn't change is the intensity of those bonds. In helping guide the company, he does his best to remember that every day. And when he forgets - Teslin's right there as an ardent reminder.
Nigel's past includes teaching in Asia, guiding in the Yukon and Alaska, and writing copy for advertising agencies.
But nothing compares to the job he has now.
