Cafe style. Came for what my girl calls "mike high" lemon meringue pie. It was more like 15 mm, but who am I anyways? Oh ya, I'm the guy that ordered a slice of pie here today and watched incredulously as one of the staff members ate some pie filling from her fingers as she made a pie. But it's ok. She was wearing gloves. Mmmmmm.

I still ordered and ate a piece of pie. Don't judge.

Tourisy, overpriced Desserts Pies and Pot Pies but it was HARD to resist.  The way they displayed everything it was such a draw for the unknowing Tourist.  Outside of the price factor, the Pot Pie wasn't too bad even when they are all pre-made and awaiting the customer in a warming oven.  2.5 *Star*

The staff told me the Chicken Pot Pie and it was even served with a side Salad.  I went against him and decided on Clam Chowder Pot Pie($9.95) that has no side.  It has a Flaky Puff Pastry covering that contained the right amount of butteriness.  The Clam Chowder was extremely Hot perfect for consumption on a cool Day at Granville Island.

Feel free to share a Table with Tourist, Wifes w/Babies and other Lunchers as this Meal comes with a classic Pot Pie Bowl which cannot be taken away.  The Dessert Pies look huge but I can't comment on that since I didn't partake.

On that rare occasion you visit Granville Island, remember to save up your CLAMS so you can enjoy these Clams.

    YUCK!
Stale heavy overly sweet without any flavour. The slice of Key Lime Pie was outragously disgusting. YUCK YUCK YUCK

The service was rushed the slice of pie on a paper plate with a skinky papar napking on the side. Off we go to sit on a bench outside, there is nothing inside. The fork almost breaks in the "custard". The cream on the top is cakey and hard. I bring the plate back in and when asked when the pie was baked the server turned around a walked away placing the piece of pie in the garbage. No answer. Finally after one of the other staff asking if I wanted something else I said no I wanted my money, they called the staff person back who refunded me the price of the pie with out tax.

Just plain overpriced, rushed and not fresh at all.

    Stay away.

The desserts are overpriced, but I just couldn't resist! What caught my eye is the gooseberry tart. I've never even heard of a gooseberry! It's a nice round orangy tangy berry that reminds me of the texture of a cherry tomato. When paired with their vanilla custard in their tart, it's ooohhh sooo good!!

    Check out my pics.

For 20 years A La Mode has been warming market-goers with their hearty pot pies, while satiating those craving something sweeter with a vast array of delectable pies and tarts.

Easy to find, A La Mode located at the east end of the market where the common dining area is located (with views of False Creek, downtown Vancouver and easy access to the benches outside when the weather permits.) Finding a place to sit however, well . . . Good Luck!

The pot pies have a deliciously flaky puff pastry crust that folds over a mug, bowl or large ramekin depending on which type you buy, and the creative fillings run the gamut from traditional chicken to local favorites like crab, prawn, lamb or scallop. There are at least 10 different pot pies to choose from and easily as many (if not more) sweet pies offered. Be warned however, that the pot pies are baked in batches, so you might want to choose a back-up in case the one you want is not available at the time that you order.

I picked up a chicken pot pie, a blackberry pie (a la mode of course,) a butter tart, and a mincemeat tart.

The pot pie was rich and hearty with generous pieces of chicken and celery. If you are looking for comfort food, then this is definitely your pie. My only wish would be for at least twice the amount of crust, but I suppose that wrapping the entire bowl in a crust of puff pastry would be silly . . . right?. (OK, so when you are writing about food and you start to salivate, then you know it was really good! Well, I'm salivating!) The pastry with the gravy is really that good!

The tarts were very good (especially the butter tart,) but  the blackberry pie was just average in my opinion . . . I know that I am a snob when it comes to food, but the blackberry filling was a little to thick and dry for my taste. In all fairness, blackberry season was about 3 weeks away and I had, just a few days earlier, devoured a few dozen fresh off the vine in northern California, but still! I also asked for the pie to be heated, but it barely hit tepid, and the ice cream didn't even begin to melt (or soften) at all.

The house-made lemonade was very good, and although I didn't try any, I noticed that they made quite a few fresh fruit smoothies.

Without a doubt, I will eat here again! I can quite happily imagine passing quite a few rainy afternoons sitting in front of the windows overlooking both the city and False Creek while chasing away a chill with a hot pot pie (or two!) As to those cherished sunny summer afternoons, hopefully the next pie will be better!

** on a side note - A LA Mode sells their plastic utensils for either a dime or quarter each, so if you just bought some cheese or pate from Oyama . . . here is the place to grab the utensils. Strange I know, but they do it, so there must be a need for it.

Soup in a cup with baked pastry on top!! Perfect for the rainy weather! French onion was good, wish they had more broth to enjoy... it was over packed with onions.. we were barely able to enjoy the broth.. There are many other options to choose from.. clam, corn, seafood, chicken chowder..etc... Good to share.

Couldn't resist the french onion soup. It was lighter and less rich than most, but it still had a nice oniony flavor and it was such fun to break into the pastry crust.

I was super excited to pick up a couple of pot pies from A La Mode the last time I was at Granville Island Market. We got the roasted vegetable and the creamy vegetable. The roasted vegetable was pretty dry and I don't think the creamy vegetable was vegetarian. I should have asked. The pie crust was flaky, buttery and delicious though. Unfortunately, as a whole package, I was rather disappointed. I'll probably give them another try in the future. The pot pies in mugs look enticing and I really want to try some of the sweet pies.

When summer rolls around and the rubarb and strawberry seasons hit it time to head in on the way to a BBQ. They have the best whole pies in town, baked on site and very consistent, the quality has been consistent for the last 20+ years. When needed the pumpkin pie is a requirement for Thanksgiving.

I've always loved them (ate there since I was a little kid), but dropped by recently for a slice of my fave coconut cream and it was REALLY expensive! 7 dollars for a slice of pie!?
