Review from Marc D.
Vancouver, BC
Remember the "Great Water Crisis" in Vancouver when the normally kind and gentle Vancouverites were hitting each other over the head at Costco fighting for bottled water after the storms contaminated the water supply and there was a boil water advisory?
I found a large water cooler sized bottle of water at this convenience store, and lugged it home. As I recall they charged me a $20 deposit on the bottle (which cost $10). So I paid my $30 and went on my way drinking water that probably contributed to the ozone hole and global warming.
Karma hit though when I tried to return the bottle for my $20 deposit to the same store. The owner (a grumpy guy in his 40's or 50's) yelled at me saying that I shouldn't have bought the bottle with a credit card and that he wouldn't refund my money because I had bought it with a credit card.
That somehow didn't seem right. I persisted and continued to request my $20 back. He said that he would give me a store credit. No way, man. A deposit is refundable.
He then finally confessed why he was being so difficult. He said, "I get charged 2% when you use a credit card, and then I have to give you back cash. So I lose 2% every time someone does that."
So, stupid me, I thought to myself, "Why did your clerk sell it to me using a credit card if you aren't happy with that? And is that really my fault?" But I figured that would just piss him off, and I didn't want to have to deal with him anymore. So I said, "Can I just pay you the 2% of $20 to cover your cost?" He said yes, and he gave me back $19.60 on the deposit. I felt like asking him to give me the full $20 and then charge me the 40.8 cents on my credit card. But I figured he might not get the joke at that point.
I have never returned! Beach Avenue Market is just a few steps away, and much MUCH nicer both on the service level and selection.Listed in: Fool me once, shame on you.…
