We took the street car from Queen's Quay (after coming back from Toronto Island) to Chinatown (yum yum).  We were at the Queen's Quay station for a good 15 minutes before any streetcars arrived. The first three were all in the other direction.  The next two were on our side of the platform but it was a different line. Finally, just as I was about to faint, the 510 came!

I have to say that $3 is pretty expensive for a ride Come on, it's essentially a bus.  Wait, is $3 how much buses cost in Canada? It's $1.50 in LA. Anyway, we rode it for the novelty (the bf suggested taking a taxi but I pretended like I didn't hear his comment).  The thing was really slow. I don't know why I expected it to go faster. I should've known better from all of my experience riding Muni lines in San Francisco.

But alas, it got us to where we wanted to go and it was fun while it lasted. Would I want to ride it for actual transportation purposes? Definitely no!

I still remember the days when Spadina Bus #77 used to service Spadina Avenue. Yes these buses even inspired a song "Spadina Bus" http://www.youtube.com....

Now Spadina is serviced by LRT in the form of 510 Spadina Streetcar. What difference from the other streetcar route VS LRT is the right of way so it won't be influence by the flow of automobile traffic.

I think with the disappearence of the buses, Spadina Ave looks so much open and the flow of traffic so much better. And of course less pollution too because of not running on diesel like buses!

For the 510 streetcar itself.. I found it is so neat to be hiding underneath Spadina Station!

I don't ride it often so I cannot comment on the frequency aspect but hopefully one day as TTC promise all these old streetcars will be replaced by the newer faster streetcars model.

It's true, I've never had to wait longer than 3 minutes for a Spadina streetcar to arrive. They are frequent (unlike Bathurst Streetcar, UGH)

I've been taking the 510 a lot lately to and from my new home (Front/Spadina). When you get on at Front, it's nice and EMPTY! Once you hit Dundas St it really packs up with Chinatown shoppers on their way home (yes, sometimes they have smelly groceries with them). Such is life, I cannot fault a streetcar line for it's smelly passengers :)

The other good thing about the 510 Spadina is that its tracks take you UNDERGROUND and deposit you inside Spadina station, with direct access to BOTH subway lines. No need to step outside if it's raining or snowing.

By far the worst streetcar line in Toronto.

I read somewhere that the only two cities in North America that have streetcars are San Francisco and Toronto. Unfortunately this line, along with the 501 Queen, is a line that either needs a massive overhaul or to be completely abolished.

First of all, the wait times are terrifyingly inconsistent. Sometimes you'll wait no minutes, sometimes you'll wait upwards of 45 minutes. I'm convinced that the recent TTC ads proclaiming "We're staying up later for you! Extended bus and streetcar service till 1am" really means they've reduced the number of streetcars and spread them out, because the wait times are worse than ever.

At times you'll be waiting for so long, only to suddenly see four or five streetcars in a row coming your way. Of course it's one of those times that you need to get to Queen's Quay and the streetcars are all short turning at King or something. Bah.

Second of all, the streetcar REEKS. It passes through Chinatown and everyone gets on with their various bags of weird organ meats and fresh (or from what it smells like, rotting) fish. With 14,000 passengers per day (the busiest streetcar line in the city), it gets really gross.

The Spadina streetcar is certainly the "Best of the Worst".

I would be inclined to agree with Chris P. with regards to the frequency of this car... I've never waited longer than 4 minutes at the station.

I should not that I very rarely take this puppy further south than Queen so catching one that goes to Union or Harbourfront may be a whole other problem!

Oh Spa-din-ah, our relationship is rocky. I have to build up my energy just to see you. You love to sometimes travel alone or travel in groups (3 all at one time!). You will get me to my destination on time but always take longer to get me home. When you are packed, you constantly smell like the inside of a fish market. Yet, sometimes there is no other way around you..and I think you know that. You know I will never end things with you because I have no choice. Hence the fact that you will never change.

I have to agree with Kat F. about the smell, especially in the summer!  On the other hand I've never had any problems waiting for a street car.  There always seems to be one at the Spadina station when I'm arriving and one coming down the street when I'm ready to go home.  Still though, its the TTC so you're not going to get more than 3 stars out of me.
