Review from sarah l.
This is my favourite trolley line in Toronto. I pretty much only ever take it westbound from Broadview and Gerrard so I don't have the same polkaroo experience with the ghost of the 504 that others describe.
Specific 504 win:
Last week I was at Mystic Muffin for lunch and when I left a 504 was at the corner. The opposite corner from where I was at. He was stalled at a red light and I hurried across the street but I had to do a double cross and his light was about to turn green. With worry on my face I impatiently waited for the walk sign and prepared myself for the pending devastation of the trolley pulling away just as I arrived at the stop. But he waited for me. I could not believe it. The driver waited for me. He preserved the happiness I had been working on that day.
504 forever. -

Most random car ever.
A typical ride on this involves waiting 20 minutes, then having 3 cars in a row arrive at the same time.
It's always super packed and full of hobos. -

King Streetcar, what a f-ing joke. Seriously.
This one ranks right up there with the Bathurst streetcar. As in shitty and inconsistant.
I've only been using this line for a week and I'm already DONE with it and figuring out an alternate route.
It's just not right when no streetcar comes for 15+ minutes but then 3 in a row come. And I just love waiting in -25 freezing-my-ass-off weather on a damn street corner hoping this thing will show up, meanwhile I could have walked most of the way home in the time spent waiting.
Oh, and those streetcars that go by saying "NOT IN SERVICE"? That's just cruel. WTF are you driving around for if you are not in service? Such a tease. -

if i didn't have a sole friend on yelp, i would not get friends' activity updates, and i would not know you could even review streetcars. so thank you Eric L.! now i have a platform for my hatred of the 504
to be perfectly honest with myself, and all of you, this review is a little bit shallow. of COURSE, there are dozens of factors that go into my brutal experiences with the 504. many are out of the hands of the TTC. traffic as a result of popular king st clubs is one of them. regardless, i have boycotted the 504 in favor of using other routes that the ttc websites indicates will take twice the time, and in fact take half the time.
here is my typical experience. approximately 10:20pm.
1) wait outside st.andrew station for longer than i feel i wait anywhere else for the 504. is it in my head? whatever. i'm sticking by it.
2) board, finally
3) experience the streetcar move like the contents of a jar of honey.
4) twenty-five minutes, get out at my destination. which would have taken ten minutes to walk to (king and brant, to be specific)
taking this streetcar means that i arrive at my usual destination in the same amount of time it would take me walking the whole way. without the fresh air, and with a huge serving of fidgety frustration. and the subway fare. -

I'm updating my review based on today's kickass, no bullshit driver. He first wielded his powers when an inconsiderate guy boarded the streetcar listening to someone yell on a walkie talkie. The driver stopped at the light, stood up facing the back, crossed his arms and said "Now what makes you think the rest of these people on the streetcar want to hear about, or care, what's coming out of that walkie talkie? Turn it off or get off."
Then, three stops later, we were about to pass through the intersection at Parliament when the northbound bus pulled up at the corner. Seeing that a woman had pulled the request stop and was getting flustered that her bus was there, the driver pulled through the green light intersection and stopped midway, blocking the bus from going anywhere, so that the woman would be able to get on it. As she disembarked, he declared "Who ever said we don't give a shit?" and smiled.Listed in: The Most Random Things I've…, Public Transit in Toronto

A-OK pretty much sums this route up. I'd be giving it a full 5 stars but the rush hour crowd seems to have missed out on the safety-circle lesson from public school.
WTF? The route seems to run frequently during rush hour so I'm not sure why you feel you have to jam onto an insanely crowded car when there's clearly one coming right behind this one. I guess I'm oblivious to the axe murderer chasing you in the financial district clause?
Also, when you primp your hair with an iron until it has lost the shape and texture of human hair and morphed into a coarse Howard Stern Halloween wig, please be considerate enough to not let it touch my bare arm or the side of my cheek. You have no idea how disturbing that feels.
Like I said, aside from the rush hour crowd, it's a great route. -

The 504, A streetcar named desire, living in my memories forever :-)
Maybe heaven for me will be riding this car down from Broadview station over and over again on a sunny day. -

This route has now become a detour, within a detour within a detour, within a detour....INCEPTIONS?!
Lately I get the feeling that the Gods of TTC are mocking me and making sure that I CANNOT get to work without answering these riddles three...
Which bus route manages to scale from Broadview all the way to Dundas West subway station while completely avoiding Dufferin or King? (which is where I NEED to go!)
Which route intersects itself in two formats (Streetcar and bus)?
Which route routinely updates itself with and mostly without proper notification to its users?
This situation is getting so bad that I have started seeing 29 Dufferin again and I HATE 29 Dufferin. http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

504 = feast or famine. Seriously.
Now I don't have too much of an issue with it since I take it a pretty short way. Technically I could walk and avoid this streetcar but I'm lazy and like to avoid the area I'd have to walk thru if I didn't take it. In general, I appreciate the 504.
Except when I'm standing at Broadview and Queen waiting for a 501 eastbound, or it's lesser known relative, the 502. Then I effin' hate the 504, because that's all that comes past. The 504 comes in droves. Non-effin-stop. And there I am, like an a-hole, waiting, sometimes for 30 mintues, for a 501.
Is it the 504's fault that the 501 never comes? No.
Is it the 504's fault for teasing me every single time I see it in the distance? For every time I say to the other suckers waiting "that can't possibly be another 504?!?!" YES. Yes, it is the 504s fault.
Ironically, when I am waiting for the 504, and not the 501, then droves of 501s go by, with not a 504 in sight. Seriously. Seriously. Seriously.
One star docked for teasing me, 4 stars for being fairly consistent (at least eastbound)! -

Like those who've taken the time to review this route, I also have a sneaking suspicion that it doesn't really exist...or not when you need it anyway.
In all the times (which, I'll admit is not as a daily commuter on the route) I've waited for the streetcar on King, I would say only 10% of the time has it come in a reasonable amount of time. I waited at King and John for 10-15 minutes around 8 pm recently and couldn't see one coming, so decided to walk to my stop (Bathurst). And just as I got to the busy King/Bathurst intersection a car finally passed me...swiftly followed by 3 more. And that, I find, is most often the trend on the 504...you'll wait forever but when it does show up, it brings friends. -

I was very hesistant to review this streetcar because I'm not altogether convinced it exists. It's kinda like the Knight Bus in Harry Potter... except that one DOES show up when you need it!
