Review from Laura P.
With fresh interiors and a waterfront presence, 44 North is a restaurant hotel, but maintains a less than generic aesthetic. Immediate bonus. Advocating fresh, local seafood, Im already interested, and so a trip down to meet a few out of towners seemed like the right call.
Unfortunately, the dining com of the experience was just a little lackluster. Blasé service and a bland haddock dish were extremely disappointing-- perhaps I expected too much in seeing the inspired decor. Nothing outwardly wrong with the meal, it was just very blah.
I was hoping for pizzaz and something to talk about. Add to the fact that the prices didn't match quality, I'll suggest another spot next time guests come to visit. -

My parents have been visiting from NL this week and took us to 44 North Restaurant last night (us = my husband, two kiddos and myself). Everyone had a round of apps to start, My children (6 & 10 yrs old) shared a caesar salad which they loved. My parents each had a tuna salad which they enjoyed. I had a bowl of seafood chowder. It was a little on the thin side though full of meaty chunks of lobster, shrimp, salmon and mussels. I like my chowder a little thicker but still, it was tasty. My only complaint about the chowder is that it was huuuuuge! it was bigger than meal size. I only ate half otherwise there would have been no room left for my meal! My husband had the french onion soup which he liked until he got to the bottom of the bowl. He didn't know it was chock full of whole peppercorns so was a little of a shock to his taste buds. All in all, the appetizers were pretty good.
Now, on to the main courses. My husband ordered a medium rare steak. It was cooked a little more than he would have liked but not all that bad. My mother & I ordered salmon which came with a side of veggies & fingerling potatoes. I loved mine although the veggies came very heavily peppered. Good thing I enjoy pepper, otherwise it would have been too much. My mother's salmon however, was borderline burned. she was able to stab her fork in it and lift it off her plate in one piece.
My daughter ordered a hot dog off the kids' menu. When she picked it up to take a bite, the wiener flew out and landed on the floor (no one's fault at the restaurant but still kinda funny!). Unfortunately, when we told the waitress, they weren't able to cook her a new one as she claimed it was the last wiener of the night!
My son & my dad each asked for the fish & chips. When our server brought their entrees to our table, I was immediately jealous! it was beautifully presented and looked SO good! However, and I'm not even kidding, when they each stuck their fork in the battered fish, it was literally like the Griswald's family turkey. You could almost hear a gust of wind fly out of the fish as it deflated into a soggy, greasy mass. My dad seriously never complains about his meal, even when he doesn't like it. He's just not that type of person. He was so disgusted though that when the waitress came over, he showed her the fish and told her how gross it was and that it wasn't even edible. He picked out the little bit of fish that was inside (which was fish stick size) and left the massive mound of batter behind. A few minutes pass and the manager comes to our table. When he noticed the fish had been eaten out of the batter he accuses my dad of trying to get out of paying for his meal -- I'm not even kidding!
The manager was so rude and embarrassing it completely ruined our experience. I am actually being generous with my 1-star rating. If I was able to give zero stars, I would have.
I will never be back! -

Surprisingly Good!
I am always skeptical when it comes to going to a restaurant in a Hotel. From experience, they tend to be overpriced and their staff, not that friendly.
But 44 North is definitely not your normal Hotel Restaurant! The staff are very, very friendly, the atmosphere beautiful and the food, pretty good!
I went there for Thanksgiving Brunch which was served Buffet style. We had our own waiter who's name was Matthew. This gentleman was one of the nicest, helpful and most accommodating Waiters I have ever met. He even talked to my three year old Niece like she was one of us. She loved it! But I also spyed on other staff to see if Matthew was the exception or not and was pleasantly surprised. I generally didn't find anyone who appeared to be a grumpy or unhelpful Wait Staff. But I will say I think Matthew is one of the best!
Some of the food was incredible and then some was shockingly, not so incredible. The beef was amazing! They used a mixture of peppers that just made the whole experience to die for. Their garlic bread, on the other hand, tasted stale and didn't have much of a garlic taste to it. This was strange since their dinner roles were soft and quite good.
The deserts were also a very big highlight of the day. Their cakes were moist and rich in flavor, and they had a wide variety of fruits.
The atmosphere alone is worth a star since it has very large windows that overlook the Halifax harbor. Its so nice to eat and watch ships pass by.
This restaurant did surprise me. Their food and staff are top notch and their atmosphere is really well done. Their pricing is high but for a place to visit once and a while, its worth it. -

I couldn't agree more with Josh. I never really expect much from a hotel restaurant. That said eating at 44 North was wonderful.
First, let's talk about the room. The restaurant is huge and on several levels so it can accomodate lots of groups as well as small tables. There's even a private room for meetings and events and the view....
What could be more impressive than floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows looking out at the Halifax Harbour. It's a glorious sight on any summery day with the harbour flilled with all types of boats from little speedboats to sail boats and cruise ships. And even though yesterday morning was stormy, it was impressive to watch the power of the ocean, all the while being cosy indoors and munching on delicious food.
I love their buffet breakfast. It wasn't the usual buffet style scrambled eggs, dried out sausages and bacon...it was an awesome selection of everything from freshly baked goods (my favorite being the chives buttermilk buscuits and house made cranberry jelly), individual fruit cups - canteloupe, honeydew melon, pineaple and watermelon thick juliennes in a cup of yoghurt - beautiful, healthy and delicious way to start the day. The salted cod fish cakes were heavenly ...I could go on, but you get the picture.
Even if you don't stay at the Marriott Harbourfront, check out the restaurant for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. You won't be disappointed.
