I'll be honest with you...I've wasted a lot of time worrying about what Halifax isn't, doesn't, or can't. So much so, actually, that I haven't paid close enough attention to the incredible new shops and businesses that are hitting the scene, bringing us closer to the urban cool vibe that this city absolutely deserves. With places like 24 twenty eight breathing new life into our streets, that's going to change.

Unlike other urban fashion digs who determine their stock solely based on brands mentioned in Flo Rida songs, 24 twenty eight carries fashion-forward casual wear that you can be proud of, swapping out Ed Hardy et al for Gsus and GRN Apple Tree - more Henleys and fedoras than popped collars and fist pumps. The best part? This is one of the first independent fashion shops I've seen in this city that resists adding a 300% mark-up just because they carry a brand you can't get in the mall. So when you're scoping out your new wardrobe, you don't have to plan for another year of paying off your line of credit.

On the day I visited, one of the two young owners was behind the cash who was quick to give a personal welcome and show me the lay of the land, pointing out what's full price versus sale, and what's for men versus women. Until you've come out of a fitting room wondering why that cool shirt you love seems to be so optimistic about your breast size as a man, you probably take such direction for granted. The co-owners' scene connections as DJs also make for promising cross-promotions for music-lovers.

Two more things of note: first, the walls are covered with fantastic pop art that's all for sale making for a great place to check wall decor that isn't just another artsy Parisian martini glass from Winners (no offense...). Second, customers who need alterations get a discounted rate at my favourite tailor in the entire city - Daniel's Tailor Shop. So awesome.

    Go now. Go often.

New hot shop talk is centering around the opening of 24twentyeight. Headed by a pair of local djs/ entrepreneurs, the emphasis is on keeping it street-style casual and embracing local culture.

The shop boasts some budding local designers, as well as some new-to-Hali brands like Cardboard Robot and Kill City. With a space thats fresh and ultimately promising in its early days, its a nice addition. Guys, girls, local art and a fresh spin-- this Sackville Street shop has the idea.
