Review from Amanda B.
Ottawa, ON
24 Sussex Drive has been the official residence of the Prime Minister of Canada since Louis St. Laurent in 1950. It's located on the "Mile of History", near the forests and the Ottawa River in New Edinburgh, where you can find many embassies and residences of other dignitaries and government officials. Though now owned by the National Capital Commission, it was originally built in the 1800s by Joseph Merrill Currier, a lumberman and member of parliament, as a wedding gift to his wife. He named the house "Gorffwysfa", which means "place of rest" in Welsh.
This historical building is quite the Canadian landmark. It's mostly used as a residence, but parts of the house are used for important public functions and informal meetings between the Prime Minister and other government and foreign officials.
I've driven past here numerous times on various educational and tourist trips, and many people like to take pictures outside of the gates and behind the trees, as the security has been especially tight since the attempted assassination of Jean Chretien. If you want to see what the inside looks like, you can always check out the website for pictures, and even a virtual tour.
