I'm not sure if my jaw nerves are wired differently than most people (or I'm just a pussy), but after multiple injections of novocaine - causing my face to go half-dead - I still felt the wonderful sensation of the grind on my tooth.
Dr. Hui did his best to freeze up my tooth, but no dice. It seemed the entire side of my face up to my ear was numb -- except the tooth that was causing me problems. He's normally a 'painless' dentist - but even he was tapped out of ideas.
Moment of truth - "Okay - this is going to hurt you - I'm going to work as fast as possible." With the novocaine effecting my tongue and my jaw wide open, I managed to slur out, "Faaack... ottaaayyy." He's a ballsy man - a guy like me may reflexively attack you in a moment of primal instinct once I feel piercing pain -- and I can cause some serious damage.
But his skill shone through, especially since I could feel him working on my tooth - he was delicate and precise in grinding out the decay and was working like a man possessed. I was in a cold sweat and there were some moments that took me to the brink of my pain threshold, but he worked quickly and he was expertly filling my tooth before I knew it. I like the simile "... like a surgeon", but it doesn't really apply here since he is one.
I guess there is one silver lining (or silver filling) - where years of nagging from Dr. Hui to make him a "poor dentist" by flossing more failed, I'm religiously flossing everyday since that one painful filling.Listed in: East Van Life, Get Your Grown Man On
