i had a hair emergency after being in an edgy mood -- and then regretting it later -- i went to 188 in hopes that maybe they could fix it.. -- yep jenny had a look and thought of a quick fix that not only fixed my colour but also fixed my cut! She was great and affordable and accommodating! I will def. be going back here -- !

Its my second time here and I came on a spur of the moment decision after work a couple of weeks ago for a much needed cut and color. Although it was busy, I'm glad the owner Jenny was able to fit me into her schedule without an appointment (although next time I'll call ahead!). I liked the modern spacious interior of the salon and it was clean, as well. It was nice that she also remembered me from before, and seems to understand the kind of look I'm going for as I was happy with the layered cut and colour I received. She is experienced and able to provide her opinion of hairstyle and shade to choose, as I can be indecisive at times. Haircuts are $20, and I got my haircut and colour for $100, which is pretty good considering what other salons in the city charge if you have long hair.
Since moving to TO, its been hard to find a regular hair salon to go to, but I think I've found it! -
Review from Sanita M.
Had mani and pedi there with Julia. She was very friendly and nice, did the job pretty well but kind of too fast (it was busy there). My manicure took only about 15 min, I think. I did not like how she applied the polish (in stripes) and my chosen nail polish was not drying even after hour (even if it was my favorite OPI). They have OPI and China Glaze nail polishes but I could not find my favorites. They have lots of pink, blue and purple. The price for mani pedi is $30+tax, not bad, but I am not sure if I will go again. I wish more cuticles were cut :)
Oh yeah, they give you little orange juice to drink, thats really sweet. -

Needed a mani to help show off my new engagement ring ;-) And wanted it fast, but in a clean (ie. not Cali Nails ahem...) place. I found 188 Hair and Nails Spa on Spadina in a pinch and was very pleased. Excellent service, very friendly. Clean, nicely decorated and new (Opened June 2010).
It has now been 6 days and they still look amazing, no chips, only a slight wearing on the ends and I have repotted two plants, done dishes by hand once a day and I'm a nurse so I wash my hands A LOT!
Cost was under $20.
I wish it was closer to my work, but it is easy to get to- and right close to Kensington Market, so it makes for a easily scheduled activity after hitting the market. -

I am still loving this place and recommending it to friends.
They opened in June but are still continuing to honour the $30 mani/pedi price tag (HST extra!)
I did not have my mani and pedi done at the same time, but my pedi was done first, followed by mani. It was good although I did like the esthetician I had the first time better. But with drying time etc - you should budget at least 1-1/4 hours for this to be done.
I do find it a clean shop and modern in decor with the foot spa tubs and massage chairs. Like I said before the range of OPI colours makes it great too. I do like that they do not use skin razors but instead scrub the calluses on the bottom of your feet.
For the price tag - you can't beat it!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

SHAKY, SLOOOOW SERVICE, SHODDY END-PRODUCT
Though the staff was very nice, I do feel it my duty to voice my opinion of 188 Nail Salon.
I got a manicure here and it was really one of the worst manicures I have ever gotten. The first lady was so tentative and did not seem to know what she was doing. She took FOOOORRREEEVVVVEER cutting my cuticles and she still cut too deep a few times. Then they switched technicians and the second lady had the shakiest hands in the world as she applied my dark nail polish. After my first hand I asked if she was okay, and if she wanted me to polish my other hand. She declined and the polish was far too thick and a MESS.
What took 20 minutes in LA the week before took an hour and 10 minutes with a horrible end-product. I had to go home and take off the polish and re-do it myself.
Their hair salon seemed nice but they should not do manicures since they are ill-equipped to do so. -

A 3.5...edging towards a 4. The friendly staff bring it up that extra 0.5 stars.
Another month, another manicure! It's not like a manicure lasts that long (barely a week with me if I'm lucky) but I'm low maintenance and low budget.
I strolled in here on the holiday Monday, lured in by the sign outside that mentioned $30 mani-pedis. I'm so easily bought...
Anyway-salon is quite new. They only opened at the end of June. It's a hair salon in front with a manicure station and dryers to the right and pedicure chairs towards the back of the room. Decoration is great-huge mirrors, chandeliers etc. There's also a piano and I was lucky that one of the other customers decided she wanted to have a go while I was there. Free entertainment!
It was kind of a strange day for them I think....they didn't have the full staff on because it was a quiet day for business. It might be a different experience on a normal day-they were a little disorganised and distracted.
Pedicure was good. She could have been a bit more vicious with my little hooves but got a nice quickie massage of my poor Achilles and calves thrown in. They have a nice range of OPI, Essie and China glaze polishes and I opted for purple toenails for a change! It was good to see them opening sterile packages of clippers etc and I have to give her bonus credit for working around my right big toenail-my friend dropped me on it while doing some enthusiastic dancing before I left home a month ago cracking one side...and then I cracked the middle of it with the fridge door a few days ago. She did a pretty good patch up/concealer job! I managed to smudge the polish on the other big toe though which was annoying.
I got my manicure in the chair while having my pedicure. I have mixed feelings about this in general. It's great for saving time but does take away from the relaxation of the pedicure. The girl who did it was LOVELY though and did an excellent job.
Had a chat with the hairstylist while I was there and may pop back to try the hair section. Cuts are $20ish...but blow drying straight is extra. All-over colour is $45-50 approx. I'm tempted-getting tired of the bathroom looking like a scene from the Texas chainsaw massacre when I try to do it myself!
All in all, finding their feet but great potential!Listed in: Pampering and preening

I walked in after deciding i'd give this place a go and asked the price of acrylic nails. The lady said 25 dollars. I was in the midst of doing some errands so I said i'd be back in an hour. Went back with a friend who decided to get a mani pedi. We were kindly greeted by the ladies that would complete our services. After I sat down with my lady she started to apply the white tips. We were chatting on and off and she seemed nice, but then I realized she started to give me gel nails instead of acrylic (pricier) I said no, I wanted acrylic. She then told me that they didn't even do acrylic nails! So why the lady at the front desk quoted me a price for a service they don't even do, is beyond me. Since I was on a budget (and jipped of the service I initially wanted to have done) I asked if the price was negotiable. They were going to charge me 40 (45 if you give a tip) She said she would ask her boss and see if she could do me a deal. 35 dollars for gel nails is not a deal! i've had them done at 35 before and seem to think this price is standard, also i've had a way better job done than this place gave me. ANYHOW! after that little conversation, the nail lady seemed like she was frustrated by me and decided to take her frustrations out on my hands because she began to get pretty bossy and grabby when putting my hand in position to complete the nail service. She stopped talking to me and instead made (what appeared to be ) agitated gestures when I needed to put my hand in front of the fan to dry, or to put my hand in a certain position, so on and so forth. Anyhow I just wanted this horrible service to be done with. She finished and I still felt obligated to give a tip so I did. The nails looked great when they were done, some spots you could see the bond was applied a bit sloppy and in most spots the bond was overlapping my cuticle. My friends mani/pedi seemed to take forever but at least her lady was nice. As i was getting my hands ripped off by my nail technician, my friend was laughing and smiling with her technician and getting an arm massage!! I waited for my friends service to be done, and she showed me after it looked like a 2 year old had applied her polish, it was applied to thinly and appeared to be streaky. Her technician also took her customer service a little too far and insisted on putting my friends socks, shoes and jacket on for her (Nice? but kind of weird, we're grown women) Anyhow, one week later and the bond on my gel nails is lifting from my natural nail and my nails look like crap. Lifting (so I've read) can be partly the owners fault, for being to rough with your nails, to even taking some medications that affect your nail bed, but ALSO can be the technicians fault for applying the bond over the cuticle or applying it too thickly etc. Also the bond is a yellowing in some areas which indicates that low end product was used. I will not go back here, i'll just pray that their hair service is not anything like their nail service, bad haircuts are a little harder to conceal.
