good fish and chips, strong apple cider beverages. need i say more. Great place to hang and relax in the winter and by the looks of the outdoor patio the summer would be just as good. Gonna make this a regular prebar place to kick it and have drinks :-) super cozy atmosphere

Well, when the sun finally decides to show it's face, what better way to celebrate then to find a sunny patio and enjoy the all the glory that is summer(ish) in Vancouver.
Met up with the boys last Sunday, we decided a sunny patio was the only option.....needless to say, most of downtown had come to that same conclusion, and earlier in the day then we did. So, we spent the better portion of 2 hours looking for the perfect spot downtown. After numerous rejections, long waits and just plain bad venues, we settled on the patio at 131 water. It was surprisingly quiet. All 3 of us ordered burgers, I enjoyed mine the most, my buddies were not as happy by their choices (idiots, should have gone with the bacon and cheese, always a winner)
it was an OK meal, if it weren't for the sun on the patio I probably would have gone 2 stars. I'd never return for the food, but if i were ever in need of a sunny patio and found myself on water street between the 120 and 140 blocks, I know where to go! -

Eh. It was pouring rain out and we popped our head in to have a beer as a halfway mark between where we were and where we were going and to be honest, I wish we hadn't.
Our server was really nice and it was quiet enough that we could sit and chat but that's about all they've got going for them.
My IPA was warm. It was the only drink on tap that wasn't crap beer. The server had warned me that it might be warm but by the time he came around to check on it I had already drank it because I came for a beer, not a hang out.
My friend ordered popcorn shrimp and dry ribs. I'm not sure what the standard is for popcorn shrimp but if battered and greasy are right then it was perfect, but I am pretty sure they were far from perfect. The dry ribs were okay, they were bland and fairly blah but better than the shrimp.
The prices were okay, I'm not really sure what more to say, the space is awkward, I won't be going back. -

Good range of drinks and prompt, friendly service, that's the best I can say for here.
Other than that, the food was about as average as it gets. We both had the cheeseburger and fries - it merely filled a gap, nothing more. Not bad, but not good enough that I'll ever return for food.
Oh but they did play some Abba, always worth a star! -

Nice outdoor areas, especially in front is a prime area to sit and people watch.
We didn't really eat much - some french fries and farmers market veggies, both which were super tasty.
Had a beer from Surrey that was refreshing. -

I wouldn't have thought to go to this bar but for the purpose of the evening, it was a perfect choice.
When all other places were full-up on hockey night, we got a great table upstairs here and the atmosphere was perfect for watching the game.
It was obviously an unusually busy and tricky night to serve, but the staff were amazing. Super friendly, cheerful, and ON IT!
The food was not great, but I didn't expect much being more bar than restaurant.
I most likely won't think of going here on a typical night when I'm seeking a bit more style, but I'm giving 4 stars because it served it's purpose well, and I'll definitely be back for more hockey... -

Great service , good atmosphere and good food for a reasonable price. If your a real Fish & Chips fan, this is your place. Oh and try the hot boozy makers mark apple cider, it is sure to bring you some Christmas cheer!

3.5/5
Was here for the Stanley Cup final, so I had to wait a while for the sadness to die down before I reviewed.
The food was average (I had the burger), but the fries were burnt and they were consistently burnt as my friends also ordered burgers at a later time.
Their beer selection isn't bad, they have around 5 craft brews (including Dead Frog) at $6/bottle. And there drinks seem to be original, however, if you're looking for high end whiskey or scotch this is not the place for you.
Nothing amazing, but it's still not a bad place in Gastown. They really need to find their niche and go with it like everyone else in the area to really stand out. -
Review from Dan C.
Very good-looking menu, with lots of interesting sounding dishes. We were hesitant to order since no one around us was smiling as they ate. Ultimately we did and were satisfied, but not blown away by the food.
I had the 3 mushroom pasta, which grew on me as I ate it and was pretty filling. The others with me both had fish and chips, which were good but had soggy fries from sitting under the greasy fish.
Service was pretty good; price point was very reasonable; outdoor seating was nice on a sunny Sunday night. Probably unlikely to return but wouldn't discourage someone from going for a quick, cheap meal and a decent ambiance (especially people-watching from front patio). -

I've walked by this place many times and never thought to come here. Always thought it was this tiny bar. Little did I know.
Finally, we visited this spot. At first there was a bit of a wait, and then we were brought upstairs and were seated at a 2 person table for the 3 of us. Props to them for accommodating us.
It's actually quite cozy upstairs. None of that bar type feel, but more of a quaint, casual restaurant. THeir menu items are very cheap, considering it was in Gastown. Mushroom and truffle penne for $8, chili for $6,flatbreads for $10....you get the idea.
We were only here for drinks though, and I got a Autumn's Cup cocktail-with caramel, spiced rum, apples, cider, cinnamon, and nutmeg.s Result? It was a very apple-y drink, but of real flavour, and not that artificial stuff.
This is a good quick place to hang out in, and take advantage of their cheap eats. Not having eaten here, but from reading other reviews their food seems to be ok? Shall be back to try it.Listed in: Gastown Goodness.

Was here during the Kings vs Sharks game at the end of March. Their kitchen was being renovated so the menu was limited. That was a drag, however the prices were excellent. My friend and I had the Granville Island beer (yum) and ordered poutine, seafood pasta and fish and chips. There was only one fish on the fish and chips which was a bit disappointing. Also the poutine was not hot enough.
I would give 4 stars for ambience but 3.5 for the food.
Try it out -- great ambiance tho and the Australian server was super nice to change the TV channel for us to watch the game! -

Right when we got to Gastown neighbourhood we decided to get a bite to eat before we ventured out.
I saw this place and it looked interesting so it was a done deal.
The weather was room perfect so we opted for patio seating.
This place was pretty cool. It had a second level for dining and a good lookin' bar with flat screens.
I started off with a Red Racer White Ale on draught and we got started on a Poutine appetizer - Hand-cut fries, Mozzarella, Bacon, Green Onions & Beef Gravy.
Then I ordered the Fish & Chips - Beer Battered Haddock, Hand-cut Fries, Coleslaw & Tartar Sauce. Wife got a Waldorf Salad and the Cajun Chicken Rotini served with Garlic Bread and the girls shared a Smoked Chicken Quesadilla.
When the poutine hit the table it was so yummy that we scarfed it down. It didn't even last for five minutes I was impressed... I guess when given the chance I'm gonna go for the poutine!
The bru was a perfect match with the delicious fish & the chips. My wife loved her salad and enjoyed the chicken rotini. The girls liked their quesadillas and almost finished it.
The Garlic Bread was so yummy we got an order to go!
I believe this restaurant was formerly known as Deighton's Well. All I can say is 131 you rock!... -

OMG how cute!!!
My friend and I spent our last day in Vancouver vegging out and we basically just lounged around all day. I'm on vacation, I can do whatever the hell I want.
So, of course, by the time we end up going out for food, it was past 9 so many places were closed. Per usual, we end up wandering into Gastown.
My girlie had an EPIC craving for poutine, and I am no one to come between a woman and a want, so we wandered around until we found somewhere with poutine.
The poutine here managed to not be greasy or gross, but just tasted good.
Here's what I had that is still blowing my mind.
BACON. WRAPPED. STEAK.
Ok, that gets five stars regardless of atmosphere (cute, liked it), service (awesome, our server was really nice), and other food (also split a great salad).
The dirty fat man that lives in my head (and stomach) owes the chef here a cuddle, maybe even a kiss if no one's looking (not from me, from the dirty fat man living inside of me).
Who would think to wrap steak in bacon, then serve it on a stick?! And all you "healthy eaters" or whatever, don't knock it til you try it. And all you veggies, I have zero guilt. I planed a tree once, let me enjoy this.
Never have I felt more American than right now, ordering bacon wrapped steak, which is served on a stick, in Canada. It almost makes me homesick.
But anyways...
No that's a lie. I can't change the subject. I'm not over it. It's bacon wrapped steak!!!
Alright, but for the purpose of not wanting to drool on my laptop, I'll leave it at this.

I was looking for a new place to try last week for my lunch break downtown. I was in the mood for something warm, what with that amazing freeze spell we had in Vancouver last week! I walked into 131 Water and was welcomed by the bartender who told me the upstairs was also available for seating.
What a great spot! Recently renovated wooden floors, re-purposed wood table tops and smart bench seats warmed the low-ceiling mezzanine. I was the only one up there and enjoyed the natural light spilling in from the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The bartender soon made his way up to find me and I ordered the day's deal, $5 for the fish and chips. Highly recommended! Because the portions here are intended for sharing and order multiples, this dish alone wasn't overly filling but it was a great light lunch. The single piece of fish was lightly fried with a flaky batter, and the fries were excellently seasoned. Only thing I would like more of his the great coleslaw!
Excellent service. The bartender (also the maintenance manager of the joint) explained to me about the renovations and the new owner's ideas for the establishment. I walked out with intentions to return again with friends. I'll be back for sure, this time for drinks and more tastings! -

Pretty good place to stop by for drinks and small bites. Maybe I have a bias towards Gastown but I like this place more when I think about it than when I was actually there. Beer is reasonably priced and the food is quite cheap. Doesn't hurt that the servers are cute and friendly. Anyone else excited for summer already?

Nice place to stop into. The selection of beers is OK. The food is a nicely priced but good and tasty. I will have to stop in again and see if anything has changed.

The burger was 12$, but would have been disappointing at 6. The chicken 'club' was $14 dollars, but you can get more value from any Subway sandwich. The bread on both falls apart before you're done with the meal. Beer is expensive - 5$ for a Kokanee. The music is all top 40 from like 2007. Atmosphere is pretty chochy.
The owners are just cutting corners and raising prices. -

A hidden gem - the turkey and boar bacon chilli is so delicious and so full of flavour and spice. The chef does a masterful job taking familiar dishes and adding his own twist. I'm really looking forward to making this a regular Sunday afternoon stop. Excellent ambiance for a casual day-time date.
