I believe this is the 18th year for the one hundred dollar film festival, and it is just that a screening of films made by Canadian filmmakers for under 100 dollars.

Brought to us by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers, this festival happens in March yearly and is showcased at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington.

I love this idea that filmmaking can be accessible, most films are shot on Super 8 film, 16mm, High 8 or Digital.  So buying a tape can cost around 15 dollars, getting film printing for another 40 dollars, and props, sets and actors hopefully are all borrowed, loaned or begged for.

This festival brings us the most ecelectic mix of animation, drama, comedy and experimental film.  And gives an opportunity to those green in nature to show alongside the experienced.

An amazing festival that should not be missed.

I wish I had a chance to view the first two days of the festival, there certainly was a large variety of films submitted and viewed. We stuck around to see the awards handed out. I look forward to next years festival!

Some films were great. I certainly enjoyed the crisp humour of "So Long Kodachrome" ,the artistic but simply deployed style of "Reminscences" , the poetic narrative of "All that Shattering Emptiness" and the visceral "nature tampering" documentary "To Be Regained". However, there were a few that I had trouble digesting, especially the films that were more experimental. With a TV/film background/interest I don't think I have a Philistine perspective so I think its fair to suggest that the reason why some of these films failed was that they were too long and lacked elements required to connect with the audience (story, characters). After a while I had to poke my head constantly just to force myself into seeing through the whole work. However there were a few films that had interesting effects that caught my eye: "Etching with Light", "Lift off", and "CGY"

Did I just say "visceral" like some pretentious film buff wannabe? oops, DID I DO THAAAAAAT!?
